Disappearing files

P

P

Flightless Bird
I have problems with files not appearing in Windows Explorer screens. This
has happened with Word .docx files and now a Publisher file I converted to
PDF.

I am using Office 2007. Acrobat 9 is installed - today updated to 9.4
Perhaps that is the problem and I should revert the drive to the way it was
before the update.

Is there a way to make sure that Windows Explorer is showing all the files
in a folder. This one is there, Acrobat finds it in the Recent files list
but I am not allowed to see it.

Any ideas please?

Paul.

Is it hidden perhaps?

Enable Windows explorer to see hidden files

To see all files go to Folder Options:
Control Panel > (Appearance and Personalization) > Folder Options
On the view tab, halfway down, there are several settings regarding
hidden and system files etc.
What happens when you do a search for your missing PDF file ?

I supported a user awhile back who frequently complained of missing
files, yet they would open if they were still on the Recent files
list. It turned out she was saving them to a different folder than the
one she was looking in with Explorer.

As someone else suggested, a general search may turn them up.

I suspect it's something like this. Explorer does hide system and
hidden files by default, but common data files will always be
displayed. And just because a file is listed in Recent Files doesn't
mean it really exists. I bet the original poster has just misplaced or
deleted them.

Thanks for your suggestions but I have found it - by chance I believe.

The folder was being displayed in date order with weird subheadings such
as - today, last week, I forget the exact headings because I found them so
irritating but I am sure one was "a long time ago". Would you believe that?
I mean, is this OS for kindergarten or what? Anyway I finally got rid of
them by selecting "Arrange by Folder" and there was the list in simple date
order with the missing file where it should have been.

There are many things about Win 7 that make me wonder what the people as
Microsoft are on - and no, I don't want any.

I've never seen a listing with ' a long time ago ' as a header.
Are you sure you are using Windows Explorer ?

Yes I am certain, "A long time ago" is one of the headings. Yes, I am using
Windows Explorer in Windows 7.

I've seen it many times; and just checked again 2 minutes ago.
Pick a folder, change default "arange by" (top right) from folder to
date modified, and look.
I get "earlier this week", "earlier this year" followed by "a long time
ago". But there's a date after each one which kind of makes it better.

OK, I've found it.
You have the 'Goup by date ' option enabled.
Right-click on an empty area on the right side of an open window
and select ' Group by' > (None).

Ah so, a simple case of user error. I'm glad the mystery is solved.

That may explainj some of my problems as well.

I thought it was just more of my advancing senility. Sort of "I know I
have it, I just don't know where it is!"

I don't use the 'Group by' function so have never seen the heading.
I wonder how Microsoft decide how long 'A long time ago' is!

You simply selected the option Group By Date.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and comments. I have mine fixed now and I
am glad some others have been able to fix theirs.

I still think this is childish. I can't see a worthwhile use for these
"group by" sorts. A lot of the time a list in date order is what is wanted
and I think we can look at the date and see where "a long time ago" starts
for us.

It seems to me that Microsoft has reached the limit of what they can think
of to add to the OS and to Office software and are just fiddling round the
edges. I often find the results frustrating, especially when it takes 10 or
15 minutes in Word to find a command that I previously went to almost
automatically.

And I won't start on the near-paranoid security measures and and having to
confirm several times that I want to do something and being told I don't
have permission to do some thing on MY computer of which I am the sole user.
Someone thinks all this is progress!!

Shake an open window and all the others get minimised.
Cool, but I never use it.
Similarly with Win+shift+tab; a revolving display.
Cool, but I never use it.
