Disable all wireless sevices/devices on Win 7

Nice flame war you have going here.
My husband has a Dell pc which seems to have a built in wireless card.
It's not listed separately in the BIOS so I can't disable it there.
Yesterday he started seeing other computers listed in his Network
Status. We've figured out they are our neighboors using the free
wireless access we have on our apt complex.
Our network is wired and we prefer it that way for secuity reasons.
Husband is paranoid that the neighboors can see his pc the way he sees
theirs.
What can I shut down in Windows 7 to block the wireless?
I found 2 autoconfig WLAN services that I've shut down. Are there any
more I need to check?
Disabling the wireless card in the device manager is useless as Windows
simply re-installs it during the next boot.
I'd like NOT to have to install another network card w/o wireless on
this nearly new computer to solve this issure.
Can anyone recommend a good web forum for Windows 7 issues? This
newsgroup seems to have been over run by trolls.
TIA.

Which Dell? All of mine (Lattitude line) actually have a hardware switch on
the side.

Otherwise, you can go into Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center,
then Change Adapter Settings. Right-click on the wireless adapter and choose
disable.

Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center. On the left, click 'Change
adapter settings'. You should then see your wired and wireless adapters
listed. Right-click your wireless adapter, and select Disable.

Howdy, we need more info. What model Dell? Most of the Latitudes have
stitches on the side, like the D620 I'm on.
I suggest windows7forums.com

You seem to have several issues.
1.) How to disable your wireless adapter?

For this you got already some suggestions.

2.) Why does your PC automaticaly connect to a wireless access point if
your wireless adapter is activated?

On my PC's I had to explicitely tell my PC, that it is allowed to
connect to a given access point.
Normally you have also to enter the access point's password

Did you configure it to do so?
If yes is it your access point?

3.) Why is the wireless access point not decently protected?

If it is your access point, then why don't you just switch over to WPA
and change the password.

So this is a wireless network provided by your apartment complex? If
you can see other computers, then you must have joined the network. If
you disconnect from it, that should solve the problem.

If you do decide to join it, be sure to tell the OS that it's a public
network. That will prevent it from broadcasting your presence and
making your resources available to others.

Thanks. We'd missed that one. Wireless adaptaer is defiantitely disabled
now.
I thought setting up networking in XP Pro was a pain in the a**. Vista
and Windows 7 have too many places you have to look the access all the
network settings.
Thanks.

Thanks We'd missed that one.
We spent most of our time looking at the Home Group and Public settings.
My husband and I were really amused by how the "Public" settings were at
the bottom of the list and in very small print so we didn't notice them
at first. File and Printer Sharing had been TURNED ON!!!. How the hell
did that happen?

I assume by access point you mean the free wireless network we have
here?
I've never tried to connect to it. Would have no idea how. I've had
neighboors/residents ask me how to get on and I told them I had no clue.
I talked to my boss/property manager. He said you need to know the name
of the network and have a password to get on.
Thanks.

Yes it's free but you need to know the name of the network and get a
password to log on. My husband ran the network trouble shooter. We think
that may have enabled the wireless. New neighboor upstairs is using the
wireless. Probably his machines we saw. We weren't able to connect to
him.
When my husband set up his first Windows 7 machine (he's on his second, long story).
He selected "Public" because he thought it sounded more secure.
Then He was furious that he couldn't get online. That machine DID NOT
HAVE WIRELESS!. He also once set his browser to "automatically detect
proxy" with out knowing what a proxy was. Needless to say, there was no
proxy to detect.

Hi, machinemessiah.

Are you SURE that you have your newsreader client set correctly?

All your Replies are showing up as starting New threads. They all show the
Subject (Disable all wireless sevices/devices on Win 7) but with "Re:"
prepended and with your (very short) message added to the end of the Subject
line.

The headers on your message shows:
User-Agent: MicroPlanet-Gravity/2.70.2067

Is that the name of your newsreader?

Yes that's the name of my newsreader. It's been running on this pc this
way since 2004. You're the first to show report this strange behavior.
I see from your headers you're using:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3002.810
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V15.4.3002.810
I don't know anything about Live Mail. Microsoft only gets the OS on my
machines. I don't use any other of their products such as OE or IE.

The issue appears to be as a result of you editing the subject line on each
of your replies, adding notes to the subject line such as "thanks" and
"thank you". That can (and sometimes does) make them treated as a different
message and breaks proper threading.

Typically the only time a subject line should be edited is when the subject
itself has changed.
