Desktop.ini

Why does this file keep showing up on my desktop? I delete it and some
time later it reappears. It contains:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

What's the purpose of it?

I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months.
I don't like to interrupt her.

It keeps track of settings special folders such as Desktop. If you
delete it you will lose any special settings you have set and the
system will automatically generate a new one with default values. You
will find similar files in many other folders throughout the system.
You see it now because you have turned on the options to "Show Hidden
files and Folders" and/or "Display the contents of system folders" (I
forget which, but I think it's the former.) The option is found in
Control Panel | Folder Options | View.

I would like hidden and system files to be displayed when I'm looking at my
hdd structure in Windows Explorer, but I don't want to see desktop.ini or
any other hidden or system file on my desktop. Is there a way to accomplish
that objective? Thanks, PE

No, I don't believe so. I wish for the same thing, but I've never found
a way to accomplish it.

Nearest I've found is to shove the desktop.ini very close to the screen
edge so that most of it isn't visible.

Open Windows Explorer or Computer. In the left hand column, left click
on "Desktop" Select Tools > Folder Options > Make sure you don't select
Apply to folders and de select Show Hidden Files....
