desktop and memory

I have a user that is loading video files in a folder under their desktop
(ie. desktop\video files). Does windows load everything in the desktop
folder and subfolders into memory on bootup? Or is it just the "desktop"
folder itself that needs to stay "lean".

No.

Other than having icons on the desktop it doesn't really make any
difference as to what you store in folders on the desktop.

it is my firm belief that
the desktop should stay
lean and have only shortcuts.

if programs or music files
get stored into the desktop
folder,

then perhaps the exe of the
music player is also located
in the desktop folder

and maybe the downloaded
music are defaulted to the
desktop.

I suggest to move them
to a music folder and
create a short cut to
them.

The desktop is just a representation of what you put under your
%userprofile%\Desktop folder. It's a folder. It can store files. It can
have subfolders. There is no more limitations to the Desktop folder than
for other folders under whatever file system you are using. Obviously
you'll run out of screen realestate when adding files or shortcuts to your
desktop than what the Desktop folder can hold.
