Dell M1210 battery problems

We have a Dell M1210 laptop and it's great except for the battery issue..
It has the Dell labelled small battery and it runs for awhile.
Purchased TWO different 9 cell battery replacements,
and neither works.... won't power the laptop,
but the leds show full - and if we unplug the AC adapter - the laptop turns
off -

I can't tell where the problem is.....

Are they genuine Dell batteries, or third party replacements?

I get the impression that modern batteries contain some sort of ID chip
- so maybe the laptop is rejecting your batteries as not Kosher?

Have a read of
http://getsatisfaction.com/dell/topics/xps_m1210_battery_wont_charge_and_ac_adaptor_not_recognized

It's a bit muddled with faults accusations all over the place - adaptor,
battery, motherboard, class action, SoG Act, etc....

But the last post there is interesting. Do you have a selected option in
your BIOS that allows the machine to be powered on AC, but not charged?
