DEFAULT FILE TYPES

K

Kathy

Flightless Bird
WinXP SP3

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded a photo editor, Serif PhotoEditor SE, and
not so cleverly made it the default program for JPG files. Now I can't
figure out how to change JPG back to Paint.

Here's what I've done so far to try to fix it.

In Windows Explorer clicked Tools | Folder Options | File Types

Clicked on JPG
What it says is that it opens with Paint but that I have customized files
with ext 'JPG'. To restore them to default (Serif PhotoPlus Picture) click
restore.

OK, so I clicked restore because then that button becomes advanced. So I
clicked on Advanced button. And removed the open action.

Then added the open action back and said to use paint.exe. And then
clicked "set default" button. And then OK.

But it still says that JPG are type "Serif PhotoPlus Picture" and that's
what I want to change.

I can't figure out how to change the default back to paint.

Can you help please? I thank you for your help.

Here's one last thing I did. At the point where I deleted the open action I
then just saved that setting without adding the add action back. Now the
JPG files open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which looks like what
they opened with before so I must have been wrong about them opening with
Paint. But. It still says that they are Serif PhotPlus Picture type. How
can I change that? And maybe I should be asking what I should change them
to if not Paint.

Thanks again.

Hi Kathy,

Open the SerifPhotoEditor, click its menus at the top and look for an
Options or Preferences menu or sub-menu, and click that.

Try and find an item in its preferences that allows you to select File
Associations for the program, and un-check the file types you don't want
it to take, such as JPG, then click OK.

It should release the file type and revert it to what it was before you
installed the program.

Hi Glen,

There is a Preferences menu but the only entries are
General Tab has brush cursors, startup wizard or not, product updates
Undo tab, max storage
Transparancy tab, grid size and preview
Layout tab, rules, color and spacing
Browser tab, animated GIFS, thumbnails and caching.

There is no Options selection.

Somewhere I saw that the associations are done during registration but I
tried to do the registration wizard again and it said the product was
already registered with no option to go any further. Now I'm trying to
figure out how to get to "my account" but I'm going to have to calm down a
bit before going any further.

One thing I didn't mention is that this is a free download and maybe that's
why it is so obstinate. Maybe the best thing to do is just uninstall it and
reinstall it. I need to find the email with the free download button again
first.

Thank you for your response. I'll let you know what the final outcome is.

That's what I would do if there were no file association
options....uninstall and let it revert them (it should or the program is
junk), then reinstall it and choose NOT to associate it with any file
types.

Take a deep breath...it's only a machine! You are ultimately smarter
than it is. :)

Try uninstalling the Serif product.

Hi Bernd,

I followed the instructions at the link and it did open with the software I
wanted to use. But it still says that it is Type: SerifPhotoPlus Picture.
And that's really what I want to change.

I'll let everyone know what tech support says when they get back to me. And
then, if all else fails, I will uninstall and reinstall. All this for a
"free" download. My time, and yours, is certainly not free!

Thank you for your response.

This is counter intuitive but try making the association with "Serif
PhotoPlus Picture" first then back to Paint, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
or whatever you chose. The association may have gotten corrupted in the
install and isn't releasing correctly. If so, this may fix it. I had the
same problem with a different extension recently and this was the cure for
me anyway.

Pick the program you want to associate with by what you want to do, i.e work
is the former and view is the latter. Really isn't a wrong answer to what
you prefer.
