Cox and UseNet - This S U C K S ! ! !

When I first saw the post about Cox eliminating Newsgroup access, I didn't
take it too seriously, but I should have seen the signs. You can blame that
on a momentary lack of logic on my part. I just thought that since we
haven't gotten any notifications from Cox, that it may be a regional thing.
I started getting the notifications two days ago now. According to Cox,
they are removing Usenet access across the board to ALL of their customers.
Their excuse is that UseNet is taking resources that can best be used in
other areas. They are promoting Giganews and have made a deal with them to
provide UseNet access for at whopping 10 % discount for Cox subscribers
after a 2 month special for only 2.95 or something like that. I don't know
about the rest of this group, but flaming and trolling aside, I do patrol
UseNet for a lot of information I use to fix my computers when something
goes wrong. I also use it to access a few special interest groups. The
"interest groups" can be accessed in forums too, but again, I don't like the
way they display. (Guess, I'm an old fart and like things the way they
are.) I looked at Google Groups, which is free, and have checked out a
couple other sites that looked at first to be something I might be able to
use, but there really isn't anything that I have seen that comes close to
the ease of use of programs like WLM. Does anybody here have any ideas on a
decent program, site, or anything that might allow access to UseNet that
will provide similar look as Outlook Express or WLM? I'm expecting not and
I realize this is off topic, but I still thought I would ask.

news.eternal-september.org is free but no binary groups.

I tried a few free servers and was not overly pleased - I currently pay
12 euros per year for news.individual.net.

Cox is merely joining the crowd.

I'll second the suggestion to try Eternal September for text only
newsgroups, if you want access to binary newsgroups there are many
options but very few (if any!) are free.

You can use Outlook Express, WLM, Agent, Thunderbird or whatever with
any Usenet server, none are tied to Cox or anybody else.
Eternal--september has been good for me, there are many other free and
low-cost providers.

It's happed to pretty much all of us over the last 5 years or so;
ISP's dropping Usenet. In a way it's good, as people have been steered
to stand-alone providers like Giganews, who offer _much_ better
provisioning than most ISP's ever did. And lets face it, its cheap.

Actually "some" binary groups have been added recently, but not many. Don't
know their content as I use Easynews for that.

I used to use Easynews until someone told me about Astraweb. Now I can
buy chunks of GBs with no time limit. $20.00 has lasted me well over 6
months already.

Yea, my ISP has a Usenet server and I can read posts from it but anytime
I attempt to make a post with it I get a timeout. Complete shit and is
why I use Eternal for text and Astraweb for binary. I phoned my ISP to
ask why I am getting timeouts all the time when posting and the tech guy
didn't even know what Usenet is and didn't know they provided a Usenet
server.

They probably forgot they even have it, which is why its not working
well. Their solution will probably be to shut it off soon. Most ISPs
have done that simply because they don't want to deal with usenet and
most of their customers have no clue what it is because you can't "point
and click" to get it.

Which is fine by me, the more clueless people that get off Usenet, the
better. It might have a chance of getting back to the way it was before
the AOL invasion.

There is alt.binaries.photos.original as I subscribe to that. Lots of
interesting photos.

I agree there aren't that many binaries, but there are some so ES isn't
opposed to them. Because of that I suspect more will follow.

The days of IP Usenet is over, free (and cheap) usenets are now reliable and
numerous. :)

That might be true, I believe that Cox is the last (or one of the last)
ISP in the US to drop Usenet.

If there are any ISPs remaining that still provide Usenet access I
don't know who they are....

Original text removed.

I want to thank everybody for the suggestions. I have what appears to be a
good list to look into. With what everyone has to say, I'm surprised then
that Cox has held on so long.

Thanks again.

My ISP is WideOpenWest (Wowway) and they still have usenet, however they
have restricted dl's to 5GB month.

My ISP is the local phone company. They allow 10 GB a month,
but they carry all the groups, and it's fiber optic, so downloads are
real fast.

Fred,
I perused your web page and it's impressive. I especially liked finding
another MST3K fan, thought they had all faded into the sunset. What a show,
it was the funniest thing to come out of TV since Monty Python and Howe
Mendel.
Keep the faith,
