Columns in windows explorer

I have customised the columns in windows explorer to show about six or seven
columns of data. However, when I open a folder it shows only one column,
with a slider along the bottom which allows me to see a further couple of
columns.

Most of the space is taken up by the "preview area", and I can see all the
columns by moving the vertical line on the left of this area to the right.

It will stay in this position when I change folders or files; if I then
close explorer, next time I open it it's back to showing one column.

Is there any way to make it remember the way I close it? I'd like to keep
the preview area, as it's sometimes useful, I'd just prefer it to be
narrower.

Obviously, there's not a lot of effort involved in moving the line to the
right, it's just an annoyance which I'd rather be without.

Try holding the CTRL button while closing Explorer. Otherwise check that
you don't have some interfering software? Anti-malware or privacy software.

Tried that - didn't make any difference. I've got malwarebytes, but why
should that make a difference?

No, something like AdAware teatimer or such, something preventing the
choice from being saved. The explorer window should reopen with the last
view unless something is interfering.

surely it a lot easier just to close preview, then click on the button at
the top to open it as required.

Nothing like adaware teatimer, but kreed's suggestion seems to have cured
it! Many thanks.

As long as you are happy with the results!
