Changing theme kills Media Player

Here's the latest interesting bug I've run into with my spanking
new Windows 7 computer -- when I change the theme, Media Player 12
will no longer open. I get a blank white screen (apart from the
stuff on the edges) and an endlessly circling circle, and have to
close the service in Task Manager (which I'm getting more familiar
with than I really wanted to). Doing a restart seems to fix the
problem, and allows Media Player to start. Can you say "buggy
    software?"

Is this a Microsoft theme that crashes Media Player 12 or some third-party theme?
