CD/DVD drive is not detected

"CD/DVD drive is not detected"
Win XP Professional with SP3
First off...I recognize this is a well know and documented problem...please
be patient and read on.
Well..I'm giving this one last try, hence this note.
Have tried all the reccomended Microsoft and 3rd party fixes.
First ran MS's "Fix-it" - which determined that "CD/DVD drive is not
detected".
Uh huh..that's why I downloaded it.
Next tried the various registry edits, including first using automated
packages, such
as "CD Gone", "CD Reg", etc. for high/low filters...no joy there.
Next tried following inx. for manually editing the registry per suppled MS
instructions.
(BTW - Did not tweak any other reg keys inadvertantly).
Next checked BIOS..both Drives showing in BIOS.
Next tried manually disconnecting drives from PC, booting, then
re-installing and booting in hopes that auto-detect would work....NOT.
Finally tried a complete system image restore (using Acronis) from image
back-up dating back to June, which re-imaged fine...but still no drives.
Downloaded "DevManView" and have confirmed that drivers are in system, up to
date, and are available for both drives. They are showing as "enabled" but
not "connected". Tried un-enabling them, and then re-enabling them....no
good.
Have verified device and other registry entries for drives against another
XP-Prof machine working in my office...registry entries match.

So after upgrading to SP3, I have a DVD-Rom and CD-Rom that are useless.
There are no yellow exclamation in Dev Mgr...because there are no CDROM disks
showing at all.
Short of reloading XP, are there any options left to me?
I'm an experienced user, so have firewall, anti-virus, and do regular
security and other win upgrades, along with regular disk maintenance and
image back-up's to a NAS drive. I'm fairly certain, this is not a conflict &
or other such issue.
A reload of XP is out of the question, as this machine has far too many
layered apps, that I would need to laboriously re-build....could take days.
Anybody out there have any ideas?

Shutdown the machine. Open up the case and unplug/replug the cables to the
drive. Powerup.

Are the drives visible in Disk Management?

you might double check
your bios and see if the
devices are being
recognized.

Try this fix
Requires Registry edit using regedit. Make a Restore Point first.
______________________________________________________________________

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight the CDRom Drive Key(s), delete the Values "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters"

Open Device Manager (Winkey-Break, or start/run, type 'sysdm.cpl / Hardware Tab)

Remove the entry for the cd device(s), then restart.

Re Richard AZ reply - thanks Richard...but as my original note says...have
already gone the regedit route (with hi/lo filters) and that did'nt work.
Oh..BTW...also as I mentioned in my note...there is no "CD Device" to delete
in Dev Mgr....the CD/DVD icon entries in dev mgr are completely gone...so
there's nothing to hi-lite.

What you are describing about the issue at hand and especially that it does not show
up in device manager then see the following. I really don't care that what you
posted about Upper and Lower filers JUST FOLLOW the fix in the below KB which is
manual below the Fix-It notice. Do the Fix manually

Peter - Have followed the fix manually on multiple times...there are no
Hi/low filters left in
the key. That does NOT fix the problem. So if/when I open Dev Mgr there is
no CD/DVD entry to remove. So today, I broke open the case and totally
disconnected the drives power and bus...rebooted....then shut-down,
reconnected everthing...rebooted..and still no-joy. BiOS sees both
drives...XP refuses too.
I've given up. I've done the manual regedit several time...tried the
scripted reg-edits solutions, "MR Fix-it"...going at the drives thru "Disk
Mangement" ...and several other things I won't bore you with...all to no
avail. Going back to SP2 isn't an option due to my apps config...so I guess
I've got 2 useless drives. I suppose if I need to load anything...I can copy
the exe. & config files to my NAS and boot from there. Sigh....yet another
Win's mystery that shall remain unsolved....
