Can't send mail using WLM

F

FiOS-Dave

Flightless Bird
Within the last week, I have not been able to send any mail
using WLM. I receive mail OK. There had been NO changes made to the
port setup or firewall. When I attempt to send, I get an error, but no real
message indicating the problem. I am running MSE and have done a
thorough scan, with no problems being shown.
I have a second computer on my wireless network and it has no trouble
sending mail. I've tried changing the port for outgoing to 587 or 465,
but get the same results.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Bruce,

"Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks.
Please review the list of errors below for more details"
The task pane shows xx messages(s) using 'Dave's Mail'
Status failed. Connection Local Area Network"
Followed by the normal checking and downloading messages.
The Errors tab is blank.
Obviously, I am able to send News messages.

It's possible that it's a server glitch. Also, try resetting your modem.
Unplug it for 15 seconds and plug it back in. Give it time to reset. Try
rebooting as well.

If the problem persists, I would suggest asking the experts here.

Have you looked at your settings in Tools - Options - Connection - Internet
Connection Settings / "Change" button - "LAN Settings" button - should have
"Automatically Detect Settings" checked.

Here's what I would do:

1. Enable error logging in WLM. Go to Tools, Options, Advanced, then
Maintenance. Make sure Mail/Email is checked. With error logging
enabled, attempt to send an email, which will likely fail, but now you
have a detailed account of what went wrong. Look for the error log,
probably called smtp.log, and tell us what it says. The information
you seek should be there.

If you like playing around, you can also do these:

2. Compare in great detail the settings on the second computer, the
one that works, to this computer that doesn't work. There is likely to
be a difference in the name of the outgoing mail server, it's port,
the username/password combo, or other related security settings.

3. On the computer with issues, Telnet to the outgoing mail server and
log in with your username and password. If Telnet works, then it's
even more likely to be a setting within WLM.

It's beyond me how resetting the modem or checking your LAN
configuration can have any effect on this issue. Good luck, and let us
know what the smtp.log says.

Here are a couple of links that may help. The first basically repeats
what I listed in #1 above, while the second provides a short list of
mail server error numbers and what they mean, just in case it's
needed.

Does it use the same POP3 and SMTP servers as the one with trouble? If
so, check to make sure the port for STMP is set the same on both,

Hi Char,

After some digging, I found the log at
C:/Users\cptrname\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsLiveMail.
I cleared out the old log and created a fresh one with only a request to
sync my mail.
It is a 4k text file which looks like this:

Try as I may, I couldn't decipher the cause for the failure to send the 53
messages
in my Outbox, although I do se those ZoneError and Retry messages.
I did try rebooting the router, since that was an easy try.
I haven't yet done a detailed comparison between the two systems, however,
the other system is using OE on XP Pro, but all the port configs are
identical.
Can you make heads or tails of the log info???

Many thanks for your detailed and informative help, so far!

Dave

Dave,
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but it looks to me like your
server information is wrong. It looks like you're trying to access
"pop.server.com" on port 110, which won't work for sending mail. Port
110 and "pop" are for receiving email, not sending.

Things to do:
1. Verify the server name. I would expect to see something like
smtp.server.com rather than pop.server.com, and that's assuming that
"server.com" is correct for your ISP.

2. Set the port to 587, 465, or 25, based on what your ISP wants you
to do. In fact, go through all of your email settings with a copy of
your ISP's email configuration instructions handy.

Fix the server info and you should be all set. If you need more help
please provide your ISP information so we can help look up what the
settings should be.

For what it's worth, I used Telnet to connect to pop.server.com on
port 110 and was successful, and then I tried to Telnet to
smtp.server.com on port 25 and was also successful, so I'm guessing
"smtp.server.com" and "port 25" might be your settings to use. Just a
guess, though.

If you make changes and still have issues, provide another log file.
It really helps!

Hi Char,

The log shows port 110, but it looks like for incoming, which works
correctly.
I verified that ALL port settings are correct.
Since it seems to me that the only difference between my two systems
is the mail client, I installed Opera on this system, and was able to send
mail from it!
I think that definitely points to WLM as the culprit.
Opera seems to choose the ports itself, so I haven't been able to verify yet
if it
is using the same ports, however, as I stated earlier, the same ports ARE
being
used on the XP system and it works just fine (with OE, however.)

I'd rather not give up on WLM, but if it is going to continue to be a
hassle, I just may.

Any other ideas????

Thanks again,
Dave

I also saw this in the log:
>srv_name = "pop.server.com" srv_addr = xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:110

Is it safe to assume that you x'd out the server address? If not, then
WLM doesn't know the address and sending would fail.

>I verified that ALL port settings are correct.

It would be great if you could upload a screen capture of your WLM
config so we can see what you've got for server name, port, etc. It's
pretty clear now, especially after you tested with Opera, that
something isn't configured properly. Maybe a fresh set of eyes will
find it quickly.

Alt+PrtScr should work to capture just the active window. Paste it
into a picture or document, then include it as an attachment. (This
isn't a binary group, per se, but I hope the occasional attachment
won't be frowned upon.)

The whole message will be frowned into NUL: on many servers.

Yes, I tried that and it was summarily rejected.
If I need to, I could host it on my website and leave a link.

Yes, I x'd it out. Address was correct.

I generally use the snipping Tool to capture. If needed, I will upload the
image(s) to my host and post a link to it (them?)

I can't seem to find anywhere in Opera to show or modify the ports.
It looks like they've locked that out to prevent problems.
Of course, I've only used it for about 1/2 hour, so it may just be a
case of unfamiliarity...

Sounds good, thanks.

If you didn't change anything, then Opera is using port 110 for Pop
and port 25 for SMTP.

Not sure if this is the same version that you have, but maybe it's
similar. It should be easy to see/change the email settings.

Here is some added information;

I created a NEW mail account using all the same info as the previous one,
except for the name. I then attempted to SEND an e-mail using that account
and it works perfectly. I did screen dumps of all the setup tabs and
CAREFULLY
(twice) compared them and there is NO DIFFERENCE!

It MIGHT be possible that there is a hidden character in there somewhere, so
I will
RETYPE all the data into the first set of tabs to see if that solves the
problem!
(I have little hope that it will, however...)

Yes, and I will now delete the old account and continue using the newly
created one.
This doesn't answer the question as to why it happens, but I'm satisfied
that I can
now correct it easily if it occurs again.
This only leaves me one problem...
How to re-address all 65 outgoing messages in my old account in bulk!
I've done it singly and it works, but I don't want to have to call in each
message
individually to re-address them.

If I get no responses to this message, I will create a new topic.
Thank everyone for your input and suggestions.
