can't record sound or video

Hi,
I am running OneNote 2007 on a Windows 7 Home Premium computer. I have Media
Player 11 or 12 (which ever came with Win 7) and directx 11.X

When I try to record sound or video I get the same errormessage every time:

"At least Microsoft DirectX 8.1 and Windows Media player 8 are required to
record sound. Install both programs from Download Center on the Microsoft Web
site or try to reinstall and then try again"

Any suggestions what to do. I dont suppose downgrading from DirX and WMP 11
to version 8.x is appropriate?

Thanks in advance
Christian

Hi Christian. I had the same problem too in OneNote with no sound and
video recording in Vista, and nobody on the forums knew how to fix
it.

I suspect the problem had to do with the K-Lite codec pack I had
installed on my computer previously, as some Microsoft programs don't
like it when the default Microsoft AV components aren't set as the
default.

(1) So, do you have a third party codec pack installed, and if so,
perhaps try uninstalling it?

(2) Are the Microsoft codecs set as the default? I know that they are
terrible for MPEG (MPEG-2/4 decoding in Media Player/Media Center is
slower than in VLC) but it just might reenable sound and video
recording in OneNote.

(3) In Win 7, I think the media player component can be uninstalled
and reinstalled now (unlike in Vista). Perhaps that might do the trick
to reset your media settings?

For me, I got rid of the problem unfortunately only after a clean
reinstall. I'm running OneNote in Win 7 x64 now with no more audio and
video problems.

Good luck!

PS If you are using codec packs, my advice is to stay away from them
as they seem to mess up your system and not provide a good way to undo
the damage they do.
