Can't record folders to disc

I was trying to copy folders to disc using Sonic Record Now. I tried
different discs , but each time I clicked the burn button I got the message
"Please insert an appendable data disc and try again"
I have made copies before, but for some reason my machine (HP Pavilion f1703
with OS XP Home Edition) is not letting me copy some picture folders to disc.
I am using brand new dvd discs, and I know there is enough room to make the
copies.
A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are trying to do a UDF (packet write) type of burn.
In order to do that type of burn the CDRW/DVDRW must first be formatted.

CDRW/DVDRW do not come pre-formatted. Although their is in theory a UDF
standard, I have found that depending on the software used a UDF disk
may not read on a system other than the one it was written on.
Additionally if the disk is not closed, then you can also run into
problems with the disk being read on other systems.

I would do a standard burn (ISO 9660 standard) and make sure to close
the disk and then it should be readable on any system.
