Can't open WMV file in windows media player

I keep getting error "The file type is supported by the Player, but the file
was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player. " when
tried to open .WMV files. The same files used to work fine. Is it that some
windows media player system files got corrupted? Is there any way I can
replace them?

Mine is Windows XP home edition, service pack 2. Thanks.

Sorry I'm not an expert but here

are my two cents. I've gotten that message a bunch when I play a file that's broken or just straight up wrong. For example if you rename Pic.jpg to Pic.wma then it will give you that message. My suggestion would be to make sure you are sure the video files you are playing aren't the source of the problem.

Two more things - is it possible it's a newer codec of wmv that's not supported by your player? If you don't have it, get WMP 10/WMP 11 - whichever is supported by XP. Also, why don't you have service pack 3?
