Can't connect anymore

My old xp, with all current updates, has stopped connecting to my internet.
My house has Ethernet in every room, so I don't need wireless. It did
connect until a couple weeks ago. I took it to Microcenter yesterday and it
connected to their Ethernet internet flawlessly. So something in my
environment has changed without my knowledge. My laptop will use that
Ethernet just fine when I carry it in there. What can I do to correct this
new unknown problem. Remember, it connected at Microcenter with no problem,
so something in my house changed, and I made no changes. My other 4
computers on that switch work just fine. TIA, Paul

i assumeyou tried unplugging modem&router, wait few seconds, then replug. (but
probably not the problem, because other pcs doing ok)

disconn other pcs from your network. connect only the troubled pc.

eventvwr.msc

check connected devices on lan in router/modem/etc "web page"

try ping in&out, netstat(? ggogle) and similar. http://www.google.com/search?
q=netstat+connection+others

try non-http internet (imap, pop, smtp, nntp/news (this))

Could be a bad cable. Are you connecting at Microcenter
with the same cable used at home?

I have even bypassed the Ethernet built into the house and run a temporary
wire from the offending desktop directly to one of the ports on the wireless
router.

Carry it in where?

It appears that there has been a lot of guesswork in this thread, so let's
collect some hard evidence before recommending corrective action. Try this:
1. Click Start / Run
2. Type the three letters cmd, then press Enter
3. Type the following command:
ipconfig /all > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\IP.txt" {Enter}
4. Open the desktop file IP.txt, then copy and paste what you see into your
reply.

Do the above for the old WinXP PC and also for your laptop.

Because if he had no other pcs that were doing okay, if he had to
carry his laptop also to Microcenter for it to work, one could make no
assumptions about the quality of the connection at his house.
