Reinstall does nothing, as it carries on with the settings already in the
registry. Did you perform a reset from the Advanced tab in Tools > Options?
This still doesn't always completely clear out references to external
applications (especially ones that monitor when they've disabled and then
re-enabled themselves), but it's a good start. Have you run IE8 in safe mode
with networking to see if does the same thing (I'd recommend being very
careful about which sites you visit though, and make sure you're behind a
NAT or similar device that blocks incoming connections as in safe mode your
anti-virus and firewall applications will be disabled.
And as to your claim of no add-ons at all, I find that hard to believe. It's
extremely rare for IE to have no add-ons installed - have you never been to
a site using Java or Flash? Do you any of the Windows Live applications
installed? What about anti-virus, or anti-malware? A lot of applications
inject hooks into IE and are very hard to disable, often the only way is to
remove the external application entirely.
Can you list the fixes you've tried? Without knowing which you have tried,
and which ones you'e missed, pointing you in the right direction will be
difficult.
I've never see anyone claim that IE closes their tabs before, what fix did
you find for that? As I mentioned, this is exactly what I'd expect an add-on
to do when trying to keep IE using a single process as IE8 uses a loosely
coupled process handler so a single process cleanup by an add-on or external
application will almost always result in tabs or IE itself being closed
automatically. IE7Pro is just one application that I know has an option to
do this (I used to use it with IE7 so that it would force all pages into a
single IE window rather than allowing links or other apps to open new IE
windows, but under IE8 caused all sorts of problems).
