AVF Free Installation Error

Recently I tried to complete an installation of AVG Free for a friend
of mine. He had had Norton Anti-Virus on his system. That was
uninstalled using the Windows uninstaller. When we tried to install
AVG it complained that there was no internet access. We were always
using IE and other internet access software programs with no problems.
I found a recommendation on the AVG forum to download the total
version of AVG and install that. Did it and then AVGFree installed
correctly but could not access the internet to update the program. I
am not sure the error description put out by AVG is complete and
really the error is caused by a Registry setting or a files permission
problem.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and is willing
to share their solution. On most machines and most operating systems
this is a non-existant prioblem.

Thanks for any responses.

Yes I've come across it and am trying to remember the solution.

In the mean time try giving AVG specific permission to get through Window's
firewall. It's worth a try.

< a few minutes pass >

OK I sat there with my head in my hands and it dawned on me: I reinstalled
Windows from scratch while rebuilding the little eff-er, so my solution is
probably of no help. As it was, AVG wouldn't connect to the Internet (and
just as a matter of coincidence a copy of Norton was preinstalled on the
machine) so as a solution I installed a different anti-virus - the one with
the umbrella - Antivir ..... and a year or so later when she had managed
to infested her machine with disgusting soup of sh*t-bits including trojans
viruses and spyware, I reinstalled Windows from scratch (and this time
'round without any Norton ever getting its ungainly claws into the registry
and gawd knows which system files) AVG worked perfectly.

Go figure, eh?

That can be attributed to a functioning winsock stack that Norton
apparently rendered inoperable.

@leejefferies@xxxx.xxx

You need not publish your email addy here. Munge it like above or, if
that is your actual email addy, it will become flooded with spam.

Suggest you run the Norton Removal Tool:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

If the connectivity is still an issue, run the following from a Command
Prompt

netsh winsock reset

Restart and connectivity *should* be restored.

The standard Norton uninstall tends to leave toxic crumbs on your
machine. Go to Norton's site and look for an uninstall utility. You
may have to uninstall and reinstall AVG.

Norton is the barnacle of the software world.

Your first step was okay, but you need to download Symantec's sooper-sekret
removal tool from their website and run that.

Then it is appropriate to scan the registry scrubbing all mentions of
"Symantec" or "Norton".

Then search your drive for any left-over files and folders.

After all that, you've probably gotten rid of most of the monster.

Thanks all for great responses. We got it. Shame on Norton!
