Application icons for Taskbar "Small icons"

Anyone know how to 'give' an application (.exe) an icon so it has
something other than the generic one when in it's docked in the taskbar
and the application doesn't have an icon that small? I use a netbook, so
screen real estate is Manhattan kind of expensive, and even with
auto-hiding the taskbar I like using small icons. Alas ... a couple of
applications I use don't seem to have icons in them that small, so I get
the Windows' generic icon.

OS X and prior Mac OSes had an easy cut/paste function for that, but not
sure how that's handled in Win7. I tried creating an alias but the alias
doesn't seem to have an option for replacing the icon with something more
memorable. I've tried as a user with admin rights so I'm guessing I'm not
looking in the right place?

To change the icon try right-clicking the taskbar shortcut, then right-clicking
the exe file's name and select Properties > Change Icon.
If you don't have a ready-made icon handy try browsing to:
Cwindows\system32\shell32.dll
or
Cwindows\system32\imageres.dll

Perhaps this is an artifact of Win7 Starter Edition, but when
right-clicking an icon in the taskbar I have only two options:

* Application name, selecting launches the app
* Unpin this program from the taskbar

And there is no option for changing the icon when I right-click the .exe
or a shortcut. Thanks for the reply, nevertheless

I don't know about the Starter edition, and you may be right, but are
you sure you went far enough?

1) Right click on Taskbar icon
2) Right click on Application Name
3) Left click on Properties
4) Select Change Icon button

Don't feel bad, I was about to chime in and say that you weren't the
only one who didn't see a properties option when right clicking a task
bar icon. It helps when one doesn't leave out a step or two...
