Well, Apple sold hardware with software since the Apple 2.

Microsoft just sold an XBOX and a Zoon.

For the most part, it's all software sales for MicroSoft.

It's plainly obviously why Apple beats out MicroSoft.

Apple's sold hardware AND software since their beginning. Microsoft never
made cool hardware like all Apple Computers like the Macs, iPod, iPhone,
iPad, etc., etc., and whatever's next!

Apple deserves it's place in the driver's seat in the computer industry.

As of Fiscal year 2010, Q3 (march 31) the following numbers were
reported:

Apple (Q2) Revenue 13.5 Billion and net profits of 3.07 billion
Microsoft: Revenue 14.5 billion with net earnings of 4.01 billion

But apparently a billion dollars is a meaningless number. Right?

(Goodness, I've must have fallen in with a bunch of billionaires)

Just a couple of points here. The costs quoted are the original
writers estimate based on a bill of materials. There is no thought
given to Apple's possibility of getting lower then market costs, and
in addition the writes is talking about a 20 dollar contingency for
possible guarantee repairs. While there is little doubt that Apple
reports this number there is no guarantee that the entire sum will
actually be spent, thus setting the stage for future "extraordinary
earnings".

Secondly, even assuming that the numbers are accurate it still, the
writer says, allows Apple a profit of something like 42%. Then too,
Apple charges an additional $130 for addition of 3G whish costs almost
nothing. So Apple is selling the 3G version, which costs them about
$290 for $629 for a profit of $339, which is a profit of 115% on
costs..And that doesn't take into account a possible future
extraordinary profit realized from unspent reserve for warranty.

So apparently Apple is doing quite well, thank you.

Yes. While Jobs was out of the company they licensed Macintosh
hardware to third parties. Jobs squashed that as soon as he got back
in.

Yes, that's what they do. They write software that has to run on many
different combinations of hardware. Apple doesn't have to do that.

Apple has always controlled everything: hardware, software,
peripherals, everything. Jobs has always been very big on design, so
everything looks and feels really cool. So they can overcharge for it,
and the fanbois are happy to wait all night to buy the next cool
thing.

I can't go that far. Overpriced, extremely proprietary stuff. Why the
^*&*(#@ can't you change the battery in your iPod without voiding the
warranty?

All points above understood.

The point was though, that he iPhone, and the iPad, are
physical devices, that has 'real' production costs....once all
the R & D is done and the product goes to market, at some
point all the initial R & D is paid for and the product should
become self-supporting. (Not counting updates and further
design enhancements/refinements.) Still though, each and every
device manufactured has a fairly high cost associated with
it........

By contrast.....when a version of Windows is developed and
goes to market, again, at some point, all R & D is paid for
and the product becomes self-supporting. (Not counting updates
and further design enhancements/refinements.) Now however, the
production costs for each copy of Windows is what...50 cents ?
Maybe even less when they are just selling licenses instead of
physical media. So while above the highest margin stated for
the iPad was 115%, margin for a $100 copy of Windows is more
like 20,000%.......even after both products become self-
supporting......

For me, taking *those points* into account, an iPad for $500,
while *I* wouldn't buy it, it doesn't sound unreasonable at
all. (Especially since I am in the electronics biz, at an OEM
wireless data communications company, and deal with costing
and pricing all the time.)

The fallacy is that a single product line, regardless of what it
consists of, can not be treated as a single entity as all of a
company's products must contribute to overhead thus any product is
sold at a higher price then a simple materials cost plus labor plus
profit would indicate.. I suggest that what most companies do is
simply price a new product as high as they can with the hope that they
can recoup development costs as quickly as possible and then once the
market is saturated, at a certain price level, (and hopefully most of
eh development costs have been recovered) drop the price and hope to
develop a second or third market in a lower financial category.

I had a private dinner with Steve Jobs at his mansion in Los Gatos,
California, in the mid 1980s.

In between spoonfuls of his homemade bean salad, we talked about GUI.

I early retired thanks to him!!!

Let's get that right, MS STEALS,(OR cons low prices for others)
software, (Well documented and just lost yet another related law suit
recently.), and INCORPORATES it into their products. ..From Dos to Xerox
to Apple to now. I don't think they could write completely original code
if their lives depended on it.

"UNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid

My money is on Apple. If they ever get the cost down on Mac Pro systems
to PC levels, Microsoft would be in a whole world of hurt.

Still working on PowerShell? Took you dimwits some nearly 30 years to

NUTCASE Alert! I am posting from Ubuntu and it does not crash on me like
my Windows XP. I did just install Windows 7 and the default interface
sucks. The only reason I have Windows at all is for my unsupported HP
scanjet.
I keep my windows on a separate Hard drive so 'doze can't screw anything up.
Ubuntu will see windows partitions but 'doze won't see an ext 3 or 4
partition and proceeds to ask if I want to format the perfectly good ext
3 or 4 partition. Ubuntu at least does not try to screw you, as it does
see the 'doze partitions.
Bill, former Windows user.

I think it is is a 1996/7 or thereabouts. HP I used to work at back in
the 90's but their support as lacking for anything but windoze.
I can get 6,000 DPI out of it on either photos or negatives so it is
doing exactly what I need. It is a scanjet 4890.
Now watch some smart ass jump me for not building my own.
I have a life, I am busy, and HP is just not doing their part.

I wouldn't doubt it. I have a perfectly good HP scanner (1995) that ran
on a SCSI interface sitting in the trunk of my 'project car' a 1966
Chrysler 440 police engine. All my projects seem to find their way into
that cavernous trunk. I only bought a new scanner 'Visioneer' around
2000 to get better resolution 'ran off the parallel printer port' and it
too sits in the trunk.

Well if you get a hard-on for Ubuntu, then why not migrate to the Ubuntu
forums and help out those sorry sacks with their trouble?

Maybe you know nothing of that SHITTY Ubuntu and that's why you are here.
Oops.
