The Windows DLL problem has caused problems to how many in here? You
seem to wallow in Windows FUD and make an attack at every opportunity to
satisfy your spiteful nature. Grow up!!

Incidentally, the biggest danger to all users today is websites
“booby-trapped” with malicious software and which target the private
details of innocent users. Try visiting "the
dangerous celebrities" websites. Diaz was top ranked celebrity, just a
step ahead of Julia Roberts and other leading Lady Jessica Biel.

Visit a few Mr computer Expert (how do I keep a straight face), and I'll
guarantee you'll end up with a malware-ridden computer. Just go looking
for things, such as photos and videos of those celebrities, and you will
land on a malicious site. Go for it big boy...

Hey Alias.

I'm a part-time Mintard now.
No sound on the Intel HDA.
Good Grief.

Using gnome...not as ugly as I expected.
Might have to spiff it up a little, de-green it, but it ain't bad.

Another bad thing was that I install it on an external USB HDD, and it
does that as expected, but if you don't check advanced before
installing, it would have put grub on sda instead of sdb as one would
expect. Not everyone wants the primary HDD touched...especially on a
laptop.

Fix my sound, and I'll send you $12.99.
I'll need a self addressed stamped envelope, and your credit card info.

You know how prone he is to malware attacks. ;)

Sound works fine here, dummy. Run hardinfo if you want a pretty report.
Then point and click until you find the speaker icon labelled 'sound'.

See, there you go again. You sound worked in Gnome, now it doesn't. It
sorta kinda worked a bit in KDE. That tells you that in the past the:
a) hardware works
b) the problem is not in the kernel
c) everything will play nice if you allow it
You have a fresh install of Linux Mint. If you rolled over your /Home
then that is where the problem is most likely to be. Hiding. If not
you've done something stupid or overlooked something obvious like group
permissions. Give yourself root permission and see what happens.

No, you friggen loon.
From the get-go, it didn't work.
After tweaking alsa.conf...I got headphones working.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/525149

After finding that, I got laptop speakers working.

> It
> sorta kinda worked a bit in KDE.

You can't read.
Sound worked in Fedora KDE...on this same laptop...but not with certain
websites.
Those same websites, like Pogo, now work after the Mint fix I applied.

It's hit and miss with all linux distros.
The lying sacks that love it cause its free always say "Everything works
OTB" ... It's never worked like that .... on at least 15 different PCs.

> That tells you that in the past the:
> a) hardware works

Of course it works...every fing time with Windows.

> b) the problem is not in the kernel

You don't have a clue.
When did you find linux?
Give it time.
You'll get over the "look what I found on the ground for free" phase,

> c) everything will play nice if you allow it

How the fuck did I allow that Mint fix to just happen?
It wasn't automagical.
It did not work until some tweaking and enabling backports.

You sound like a n00b.
I don't roll over /Home.
I back up certain items that I import back in.

I don't need to be root to unmute sound, select an output.
Also, I fixed it...and you weren't even close.

Duh. And using this DLL-loading exploit is one way to do it.
It's not FUD at all. It's a relevant, real issue with a huge
potential for exploitation.

Every application not installed under Program Files is a
potential target, since that isn't under UAC control under Vista
or 7, and there's no UAC in XP.

Why do you think MS issue a workaround patch so quickly ?

And why would *Frank* even post the link to the fix ?

Because it's a valid concern !!

You're not too bright are you ?

Maybe........if it's a Windows PC.

So that's how you've been infected ? Searching for pix of
Jessica Biel ? No wonder.

So, Linux users never get directed to malicious websites and get
malware? Mac users thought this too, but for the first time the viruses
were showing signs that they could penetrate Apple Mac computers, which
are considered immune to viruses.

Listen smart arse, I've never been infected because unlike you, I know
what I am doing. Just pointing it out to brainless users who seem to
like this sort of thing. Like all good Windows users, I only search for
US President Barack Obama and Sarah Palin, the failed vice presidential
candidate, who are ranked last on the list.

Are you kidding me ?

How much of a mental midget are you ?

All spyware and malware that can be installed with a browse by
technique is written for Windows.

There may be a redirection, but that's about it.
