The actor Sir Sidney Poitier died Friday January 7, 2022 at the age of 94. During his decades long career, he received two Academy Award nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, eight Laurel nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination.




  • In 1964, he became the first black male Oscar winner.
  • Sir Sidney Poitier was an actor, director, producer, activist, and ambassador.
  • Granted a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974.
  • Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009
  • From 1997 to 2007, he was the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan
