Hi,

Bought a New Computer and with it Windows 7.

I tried Word documents. It is not showing Page break dotted line. I tried
to give letters different colours, I could not. I highlighted the text and
then selected the colour but it would colour the whole page with the same
colour even though I highlighted a line.

I have XP Pro programme. I am thinking of using that one please. Any
problem in un-installing Window 7 and replacing it with XP Pro?

Is there a telephone help line for such problems please?

So what version of Word have you installed on Windows 7?

Press CTRL+Shift+8 to show formatting. As to the coloring of the entire
page as opposed to selected text, I suggest you ask in one of the Word
newsgroups that Microsoft provides access to, be sure to mention your
version of Word, when you post.

This is not at all a Windows 7 issue, and switching to XP won't solve
it. It is an issue with Word. You should ask your question in a Word
newsgroup or forum, since that's where the Word experts hang out.

And when you ask there, be sure to tell them what version of Word you
are running.

I am not knowledgeable about Word: the problem of colour that you describe
sounds exactly like problems I get when I don't really know how to do it.
I will say something about the page breaks though. I am not sure whether
you want it to show a dotted line instead of what it shows: on mine that is
a plain black line, which you can change by double clicking it so it shows a
blank space between pages instead of the line.

My method of solving all computer problems is the same for everything, and
it is to read a book. That way, instead of asking someone every time you
want to know something, you will be the person who knows the answers. My
guess is that the time taken to read the book will be much shorter than the
trouble you will have if you don't.

Why do that if the OP already has Word?

Well, it does work on my XP and Win7 machines.

Maybe the suggestion to try OO is good because the OP didn't say if he
actually tried to open his "Word documents" in MS Word but if he has MS
Word, it might be a good idea to troubleshoot the problem since one
usually pays some money to get Word.

FWIW changing the color of selected text in a ".doc" file even works in
WordPad in both XP and Seven.

Asking the question in a MS Office newsgroup could help.

27 years of experience with "clone" PC's using DOS, DOS/Windows, Windows and
being online (starting at 300 baud) since 1984 gives me the place to say
your last paragraph is both right and wrong.
Far too many times over all these years, the answers needed to problems were
not IN any book yet. Yet the manuals are still good information. I read
those. The vast majority of the problems have been solved posting
questions in groups like this one. Whether they be in Usenet, private
Newsgroups or web hosted site Forums, the groups are made up of people like
you and I who are simply other users sharing their experience and knowledge.
These various online 'user groups' are a huge and positive resource!

Your problem is not a Windows 7 problem. Its a Word problem. Installing
XP Pro will just increase your problems because their may not be Win XP
drivers for your new hardware as support for XP is dropping off due to
its age. If there are no drivers, your hardware will not work properly
and you will have bigger problems than being able to change text colors!

Like has been suggested, you should post this question in a Word newsgroup.

The problem is not Windows 7, it's Word. Look in the help files (press F1) or
go to the help menu to find the info you want. It's all there.

I certainly agree with that wholeheartedly. However my judgement, which
might of course be wrong, is that the original message sounded slightly as
though it was from a person not very knowledgeable about the software in
question so I gave advice trying to tailor it for the recipient. An aspect
of this is that we used to say to people that training courses on Word were
unknown while there were many on Wordperfect because Word was easier and had
a good help system.

Not so nowadays - Word is much more difficult to use (as is Windows 7 I
reckon, caused by a faulty data structure - the search facility, little used
in XP, has become essential in the game of find the file they have presented
us with, and on each search you only have one chance to select which is the
right one and if wrong, tough, start again. Grrrrr.).
