During this time it was science fiction that offered a glimpse of what might be. Both Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey showcased a future where computers existed as portable, handheld tablets with full color displays and touch-screen interfaces. It wasn't long before engineers began tackling the problem of how to make these fictional devices a reality.
