Agreed but... when the transition fro 16-bit to 32-bit computing was
happening, the same argument was raised. Now all programs are 32-bit,
nobody in his or her right mind would release a 16-bit version. The
same thing will eventually happen with 64-bit computing.

Alt.binaries.boneless is a high volume newsgroup, which it seems Giganews
dropped.
In response to a$$hole Andy, if you try to download more than 3,500,000
headers, XNews chokes and freezes.

Alt.binaries.boneless is a very active Usenet group. It's article numbers
require 64 bits, they're too large for signed 32 bit numbers. Most users
access articles by Message-ID rather than Article number. It contains
multi-gigabyte files. Binary Usenet readers would benefit from 64 bits but
don't require it.

When you go to the store you can get Chicken - With bones or boneless. You
pay more for boneless because there is more work involved in packaging and
preparing the product. As far as I know there is no 64 bit boneless
chicken.

I agree completely, but since newsgroups are dying, it may also be
that nobody in his or her right mind would release a newsreader of any
"bitness."

Text-based discussion groups may be showing signs of slowing, but the
binary groups are growing at a tremendous pace. Last I heard, there
was over 6 Terabytes of new binary data uploaded every day and the
continued growth is astounding.

Interesting, thanks. I didn't know that.

I suspect at this point, most people clinging on to usenet don't give a
toss about people wanting binary froups ..

Binary groups can easily overflow a 32-bit newsreader's database. The
database files can easily go over 4GB.

Don't know if they are 32-bit or 64-bit, but these are the ones
recommended by Giganews.

I suspect most people these days are here for the binaries. Web forums
(yuck) and other means of communicating have steadily eaten away the
Usenet text discussion groups.

I use an old x32 program called Gravity on Win 7 x64 and it's just as
fast as it was under XP.
