Q. Is the iPad a big iPod Touch or iPhone?

A. No. The Apple iPad is an attempt at creating a new companion device. While many applications will be available and initially the same as the iPhone or iPod, developers will find unique ways to use the increased screen size.

Q. What can I do with the iPad that I cannot do with my iPhone or iPod Touch?

A. Many of the same applications available for the iPhone will become available in the App Store for the iPad, however, developers are discussing the best ways to use the increased screen size. The first Apple iPad commercial shows some ideas, too.

Q. Is the Apple iPad a Tablet PC?

A. No. The Apple iPad is not a fully functional Tablet PC. The operating system in a Tablet PC allows people to use the same applications on the Tablet PC as a desktop computer. The Apple iPad uses the iPhone OS.

Q. I’m not sure which iPad to purchase. Is it better to buy the WiFi-only or the 3G version?

A. This is understandable. The WiFi-only version will become available first. If you can use the iPad for travel then gaining access via a cellular network is a bonus. However, products such as Sprint Overdrive will allow access of the Apple iPad to a cellular network and so you don’t need to worry about AT&T contracts or being locked into a slower cellular network (when 4G reaches your area).

General

Q. Can I watch YouTube Videos?

A. Yes. 720 HD Videos play on the Apple iPad.

Q: Can the iPad be used totally on its own, or must you sync it with another computer? If I bought an iPad for my grandmother, who has no other computer, would she be able to just download apps and music and rent movies solely via the iTunes Store on the iPad?

A: Yes, but with a catch. Based on what Apple has said, iPad owners will be able to buy apps, music and books, and buy and rent video, right on the device, without requiring a PC or Mac running iTunes software. You can also synchronize contacts, email and calendar items over the air, from an online source, instead of over a cable from your computer. However, Apple’s Web site suggests you’ll need to connect to a computer running iTunes in order to back up the iPad, and, if the iPhone is any guide, you will likely need to do the same to upgrade the iPad’s operating system whenever Apple updates it. SourceWalt Mossberg

Q. Can I use the iPad anywhere in the world?

A. Yes and No. Yes, the iPad has a battery that appears to last over 10 hours (longer for some people and depending upon the use of the iPad). Once charged then the unit can be taken anywhere. Also, if you have one of the latest Macintosh computers then their USB port can support recharging while you are using the iPad. On the other hand, the power adapter coming with the iPad (shipping only in the US) is for the US power grid. Now, once the units are shipping around the world, then you’ll see different means to recharge the battery.

Applications

Q. Does the App Store include iPad-specific software?

A. Yes. The Apple iPad applications are now listed as separate entries from the iPhone applications.

Q. Will iPhone apps work on the iPad?

A. Yes but they run at the iPhone resolution in the center of the iPad. You can double the size but this may cause problems with clarity.

Q. Can I print from the Apple iPad?

A. No.

Q. How do I get photos on the Apple iPad?

A. Use the sync cable to move photos from the computer to the iPad.

Q. How to retrerive photos after erased

A. Since the photos originally came from the computer that you sync’d the machine with, do you still have the photo? If it is gone from that machine, too, then you may want to consider software. The first service I know of is http://www.ipaddatarecovery.org/ – but I do not have any experience with them. I’d check your machine first 😉 Second, I’d invest in MobileMe so that this doesn’t happen again.

Tutorials

Q. How do I charge the iPad? It says not charging!

A. You may use the power adapter and your cable or a Mac USB slot. PC USB slots may work if the power of the iPad is off.

Q. How do I take screenshots?

A. The process is the same as taking a screenshot on the iPhone. Press and hold the on/off switch, while holding this switch then press then Home button. When you release the on/off switch, a flash occurs and the image is now available in your photos.

Accessories

Q. Which case provides the best protection?

A. Apple offers a case for the iPad and this will be fine for most people, however, third party manufacturers will release products. OtterBox provides some of the best cases for the iPhone and the same will probably hold true for the iPad.

Q. Do you need to buy a keyboard?

A. No. There is an on-screen keyboard. For those who insist on using a keyboard, Apple has one available for you.
