More thoughts on the ASUS R2H

I keep thinking about the forthcoming ASUS R2H UMPC a bit more. Why? Because it’s the first UMPC that has an integrated GPS and 1.3 megapixel camera. This combination has me dreaming up some new usage scenarios I’d love to code for. I’ve always wanted to blog more photos, for instance, and the GPS/webcam combo could lead to some interesting Live Writer plugins. The R2H’s mix of features might just hit the sweet spot.

I also can’t stop thinking about the R2H announcement, because as I read and re-read the R2H’s announcement on the ASUS website I begin to wonder if the current web page adequately describes the ASUS UMPC.

First, the displayed 830 killogram weight in the specifications list is obviously incorrect. 830 grams is more like it. For us English-unit minded folks, that’s a little over 1.8 pounds. Not bad.

Second, as I blogged the other day, the R2H’s specifications leaves out one of the cool features of the R2H: The integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam.

That’s not all of what’s missing in the specs though. There’re no mention of wireless–which is mentioned elsewhere on the ASUS page. In fact, check out this collection of photos on TabletPCCorner. Sure enough there is a flap on the right side of the case that has markings for a network port and a display connector (I’m guessing VGA?). A wireless button is visible on the top side of the unit between the SD slot and the Login button.

There appears to be more discrepancies too. Although TabletPCCorner is in French, I can see that there was supposedly a 1024 MB version of the R2H planned. The ASUS website now suggests a maximum 768MB–which seems a little odd. Which one is correct? Generally I’d pick the newest information–especially from the manufacturer’s site. However, since there are other inaccuracies on this ASUS page, I’m not so sure.

Now, of course, the pictures and information on TabletPCCorner are old. They are dated March 19, 2006. A lot could have changed in the R2H. The case is apparently going to be a bit darker, for instance.

Alternatively, maybe the differences point out that there will be different R2H bundles–one with a webcam, for instance, one without. Dunno.

Point is, maybe there’s some more sleuthing work to do here on what the R2H will really be like. I, for one, am keenly interested in the price. Maybe someone can uncover that too.
