10 mistakes new Linux administrators make
PUBLISHED: December 9, 2008

I love blog posts about mistakes other people make. The posts remind me that I'm not the only one out there who has made them. This morning, AllInterviewtips published their list of ten mistakes. Yep, I've done them all. My only "complaint" about the list is that some versions of Linux requires root in order to access certain Windows partitions. Plus, I just plain ole hate doing backups. They are a pain. Yes, it's more painful when something goes wrong and I need the backup. For example, last night I was updating a MediaWiki from 1.9 to 1.13.2 and needed to run the update.php script from a command line. I tried a "dirty trick" and re-ran the install from the browser. Wow, was I lucky to have a backup of the database because this made a huge mess. Running the script from the command line was the better choice. Oops.

In a run down, here is the list:

#1: Installing applications from various types

#2: Neglecting updates

#3: Poor root password choice

#4: Avoiding the command line

#5: Not keeping a working kernel installed

#6: Not backing up critical configuration files

#7: Booting a server to X

#8: Not understanding permissions

#9: Logging in as root user

#10: Ignoring log files

What are some of the mistakes you've made - and will admit to?
