View Full Version : Xandros Order
Well, consider it on the way :-)
Xandros ships federal express which means the product should arrive anywhere from 2-14 days
I'll let everyone know when it arrives.

I did my Xandros install Wednesday and it was a "no-brainer". First, I have a basic stock HP 7935 runing WinXP. Therefore I needed to create a partition for Linux to dual boot for a period of time. Not wanting to spend $70.00 for Partition Magic I found that Xandros could do the job itself.
Actual installation time (including creating the partition) was under 38 minutes for a full, everything on the disk, install and included a couple of minutes to create a boot/rescue floppy.
The only problem I have encountered is getting my LinkSys WUSB11 wireless reciever recognized and operating (not a problem unique to Xandros btw.). My LTWinmodem works fine, usually a problem with most distros as do my printer, scanner and digital camera.
My bottom line read is the anyone looking to transition for WinXP to Linux would do well to consider Xandros. I think it is well worth its price.

I planned on it. I installed Suse 7.3 last year, & getting it to enablt 3D, soundcard, etc. was a pain. I'm hoping this will work better.

Well, it came yesterday :) . I'm in RTM mode right now, probably won't attempt an install until the weekend, don't have much time to play during the week. :(

Well I had a snow day today, so I got it installed this afternoon. I haven't had time to really check it out yet, but so far it loooks like everything was detected & set up properly> :)
Mozilla seems slow, though.
For some reason, the bootloader didn't set up properly.... when I rebooted, I still had bootmagic offering me the 2 versions of windows I always get...no Linux option.
Glad I made the boot disk

Yes, good thing you had a boot disk !
I'm not a fan of bootmagic. What version are you using?
You know, I'm not sure & I can't check untill I go back into windoze. It came with Partition Magic 4.0,, so it's quite old.
It's worked well for my needs in windows, I assumed that the install would overwrite it & use lilo, but nope.
When I installed Suse 7.3 last year, it didn't like all my partitions & advised me to use a boot disk instead of installing to the MBR...talk about slow boots :(
I have 2 HD in this machine, each with several partitions, with w98 on one & w98se on the other. I only kept w98 around because my copy of se is an upgrade & this machine only shipped with a restore disk, so I needed something to point the upgrade disk to in the event of a reinstall. Otherwise that HD would be Linux.
So far I'm likeing this OS, I may be making major changes to this machine in the near future.

OK, back in windoze.
Bootmagic version is 1.01
Not sure why my last post listed me as "guest" my name was up on the "flying penguins" list ;o)

The most recent version of BootMagic - 8.0 - now ships with PartitionMagic 8.0, and, while not substantially changed over post-6.0 versions, is still a good deal better. It now supports GRUB as well as LILO, and can be configured from within Windows as well. It can also be temporarily disabled.

Maybe that's what I need to do...but I can't understand why Xandros didn't overwrite the MBR & stick lilo (or grub...not sure which one it uses) in there.
I didn't see any options to reconfigure, either.. although I only logged into the user account. I'll do some more digging today.

Looks like lilo doesn't like the fact that I've got w98 and w98se on this machine (2 different HD's).
I'm told I could manually config lilo, but that it won't "hide" one from the other like BM does.
I'm probably going to reconfig this machine eventually, but for now, I'm looking into a more recent copy of BM.

So in you alls opion, Xandros is a good stable OS, I am thinking of getting a newer virsion of Linux. I bought Mandrakes 8.1 Now I'm told it's rather buggy in some respects, to Cd brunning and other items. My cd bruns but It don't want to use my new soundblaster sound card.
The cd will play music but the themes won't work in the desktop manager, the hardrake says the sound card is configered even speaks that message though the speakers. Oh well!
Back to the subject of Xandros, If I'm not misktaken thats the old coral by it's new owner and name. You say it recognized your win modem? That's good My Dad is making the move to use Linux also but his big hange up is the modem. My Brothers thinking about it so I might give Xandros a try.
I'm loged in up in the left corner. But yet my post went in as guest. I'm Muskrat for any that want to know.

Muskrat,
Xandros IS quite nice so far, & the support forum is turning into a valuable resourse as well. It installed with much less hassle than suse 7.3 on my box ( & suse really wasn't that bad... just didn't get some of my HW right).
Be careful on the winmodem thing though... not ALL of them are supported (mine isn't) I use an external modem when in Linux.
If that is important, you should check the HW compatibility list over at Xandros first.

Agreed, my pctel was recognized but the driver never allowed it to connect. I've just been too busy to see what the difficulty is with it. I'm sure that Xandros tech support would help if I took the time to contact them.

My modem is "seen" by my system as well. There just aren't any Linux drivers for some winmodems. USR/3com winmodems especially.
IIUC, they are most uncooperative in releasing the info needed for the open source community to develop drivers.
Their HW modems, however seem to work without problems.

because my dad and brother both have shown a great interest in Linux and that's a factor where we always have to buy more hardware.
I bought a internal modem for this homemade box I'm running Mandrakes on, although I still have a desktop which runs 98se, It's a HP with a intergrated modem which Mandrake saw but wouldn't run it.
It's just a plus if an OS can support some winmodems. All the ground we can take from them the better in my mind.

I think I'm getting this fourm figuered out. LPH

Not all internal modems are winmodems (but many, if not most are). USR has a PCI HW modem available (model# 3CP5610A) that I plan on getting, eventually.
www.linmodems.org probably has the most info on which winmodems have linux drivers available, in case you want to check one out in advance.
