Michael's Minutes: Accomplishing What The Courts Cannot
By now, most of you have certainly read about the Judge's ruling in the Microsoft case which disappointed many who were hoping for a strong ruling to curb past illegal practices. As a Microsoft competitor, we're in a unique situation to feel, first hand, the brunt of their actions. For example, when we started selling computers at Walmart.com, Microsoft's CEO contacted the world's largest retailer to discuss their plans to sell LindowsOS equipped machines. Presumably, it wasn't to congratulate them on offering customers more choice or making available a sub-$200 personal computer.
While its flattering that Mr. Ballmer cares enough to take time from his busy schedule to monitor what our small company does, it's indicative of the environment technology companies must be prepared to operate in. Microsoft will continue to use their monopoly position, influence, cash, and legal team to make business difficult for true competition to emerge, permitting them to continue to overcharge customers billions of dollars.
Regardless of the eventual legal outcome, I believe customers are tired of overpaying for software and will seek out affordable and reliable personal computer options. And that's what Lindows.com is bringing to the marketplace. It is no longer necessary to purchase expensive Microsoft Windows based software to outfit a desktop. A single $99 fee will provide immediate digital access to a list of high-quality software programs to perform the majority of computing tasks.
As many of you know, in the early days of Lindows.com, we thought it would be necessary to get MS Windows-compatible software to run in order for people to be able to migrate to LindowsOS. This past year, however, it's been exciting to see so many native Linux programs now running legacy file formats, allowing LindowsOS users to take full advantage of the cost savings Linux provides.
