EMH decided to download the rpms from the www.kde.org website. She made sure that they were placed in their own director. She became root and tried

urpmi kde * lib* arts*

There were errors that the wrong file format was present. She also had to tell the software to ignore dependencies and also force the installation. However, she can no longer get into KDE. She's still pulling her hair out right now - so that is why I'm posting.

Yes, I'm aware that Linux and Main has this story http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=274 regarding KDE 3.1. And yes, I know that 3.1 RC1 was released last monday. There weren't any binaries and EMH is just starting to be comfortable with binaries - let alone with tar.gz and compiling things.

What do you mean "couldn't get into KDE"? Does KDM still start OK? Can EMH still log into, say, GNOME?

Well, I'm finally in KDE 3.1 beta 2 :D

The things that I see look really nice !

I was always able to get into GNOME 2 and other window managers.

I downloaded the KDE rpms. Issued urpmi kde* lib* art* and was getting lots of error messages. I dropped to runlevel 3 and found out that libpng12.so.0 was missing so I downloaded it. This allowed me to install KDE 3.1 beta2 but with a few md5sum errors. Putting startkde3 gave a kpersonalizer error and so I put # in front of the lines but still wasn't able to get things working.

Once I returned to runlevel 5 then I was able to log in graphically and get a session of KDE 3.1 beta2. However, there aren't any icons. Konqueror loads with a bunch of errors and there aren't any http protocols loading.

I'm using Mozilla right now and it seems to be working well.

That's basically an abbreviated version of what I was going to suggest...

They always say that great minds think alike :-D

You're probably missing more dependencies :-x - was it a Mandrake-specific or generic set of RPMs you downloaded?

They were the Mandrake RPMs.

It looks like the md5sum problem was in the kdeart package because there aren't any icons. The error for Konqui is libkcm_konq.la missing. The protocols missing are for http ... also file ...

Therefore, I'm downloading the tar.bz2 files for kdeart, kdelib packages, and kdenetwork. I'll try to compile these -- with my daddy's help. I'm a little bit too worried that this machine is going to be toast by morning

Any excuse to install Lycoris Desktop/LX (http://www.lycoris.org/download.php?op=viewdownload&cid=8) :-)

Well, we are going to call it quits for this beta release. Since the release candidate binary files should be available this week then we'll mess with them ...

KDE 3.1 beta 2 looks nice. The errors are not a big problem. I'm just too tired.
