In this video, Robert Scoble discusses the impact of the iPhone and touch with Stacy Wolfe, HP’s Director of Notebook Product Design (http://www.podtech.net/scobleshow/technology/1730/inside-hps-notebook-design-brains).
In particular, Wolfe points out that the iPhone–in part–has set user’s expectations for touch:
Wolfe: When we’ve talked about things like the iPhone and stuff in the touch technology, what’s interesting is it’s so intuitive when we’ve put different designs in front of younger folks–I’m talking kids under 12 and stuff–and what’s interesting is they immediately go to the screen and want to touch it. So I think it’s a very natural thing and for us to produce any product that I would say after this year that doesn’t have some kind of touch capability–I think it would probably be the wrong thing to do. (I added emphasis.) You see that right now, we’ve launched kind of as a follow on to the TX, we have a TX2000 that we launched this year.
Scoble: It’s a Tablet PC that you can touch.
Wolfe: It’s a Tablet PC that you can touch. The nice thing is that we put a full digitizer in it this year opposed to using the resistive kind of technology and so you get kind of the best of both worlds. You’re getting a very, very good Tablet for the price, but the nice thing is the ability to touch.
Now it’s the first generation for us, you’re going to see some things that follow. Obviously, the iPhone I think changed quite a bit on the perspective of the kind of interaction overall.
Stacy also discusses how HP has added a UI designer to*their design team. Makes sense. It’s not just how the device looks or physically functions, it’s also in large part what the user experience is like on the display. I’m glad to see HP doing this.
(Oh, and yes, I agree with Stacy about the TX2000. I had a chance to play around with one at CES for awhile and I enjoyed the touch + digitizer experience. It’s a good first step like he says. Looking forward, I would like to see touch gestures and multi-touch someday. Can’t wait.)
