View Full Version : kmLinux 4.0
OK, I put the first CD into the drive and let it boot off the CD. The install started to the point of reiserfs.o loading and halted.
After a day's delay and thinking about what might be wrong, I decided to press F2 at the point of the boot prompt. The installation the began in a non-English language. OK. I was guessing at this point in terms of partitioning but it appears as I'm typing this message to be installing packages.
Phew.
The installation stopped after the first CD. Upon reboot the system stopped at a prompt. I logged in as root (no password was set). I set the password and discovered that the keyboard layout was not for my keyboard. Therefore, I attached using ssh and then explored things. I dropped to init 3 and ran SaX so that the graphics display manager could be run at bootup. However, it looks like only fvwm installed.
Time to keep playing.

kmLinux is only available in german language. Basically it's a SuSE 8.2 on dope, especially tailored to the needs of german classrooms (K10, K12). It was developed by the Ministry of Education of the german federal state of Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany).
Install went like a breeze on my machine (Athlon 1100, 256 MB, 40 GB, NVidia Vanta, Traxdata CDRW) ... it of course defaults to german language and I don't think there's i18n packages available except the original SuSE ones. KDE desktop preconfig is slightly ... let's say strange (so far about the personal taste of the developers).
Need a review with screenshots? This is btw. the only way to get a full blown SuSE 8.2 as a free download (except FTP install). It lacks nearly all servers but as a desktop it's really fine and very well suited for education needs. I've never seen Lazarus IDE (Free Pascal) and HBasic (VB clone) in a distro, that's a real novum.

Hey STIBS,
I figured it was you and thank you for the information. I'd love for you to write up about this distribution. It didn't like the i810 and I don't have access to an nVidia based video system atm. Go ahead and send information to me in email lph at tuxreports.
