Slackware 9 is great for an intermediate Linux user looking for stability, and is definitely for someone who likes to manually make sure his Linux system is in sync. If your on a network, you will have to do some work at the command line to get the connection running, but after that, it seems to run like any great distrobution should. I recommend it towards those users who want to learn about their system, has a friend that knows a lot about configuration, or one who knows he/she can configure it by him/herself.
How good is upgrading application on it? Would you recommend it for someone who likes to keep the latest software on their desktop?
FWIW --- Slackware was my first stab at Linux --- from the book Using Linux. I can't even remember what it looked like !
If you want to keep it up to Current, use swaret.

I just go into ftp and check if the packages are updated, download if needed and then use upgradepkg to install... I'll check out swaret though..

The above post was by me, anyways, I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner, but I would recommend it for someone who likes to moderate their system.
[EDIT]: cybrjackie: swaret does make it a lot easier :)
Slackware is pretty active, and though their default way to update isn't that great, swaret makes it a lot easier.
