View Full Version : Ark Linux Alpha 8
I hate saying anything about a future report and review because things happen and we may decide to never publish our writings. After all, if someone else writes a fairly good overview then there is no need for us to repeat things. Instead, we can just link to it. It's one of the powers of the Internet.
However, the ISO was downloaded on July 13 and I finally got around to trying the installation. It's occuring on a machine to my left and it is quite impressive. I appreciate the uniqueness of the screen. Now, the tetris game playing at the moment is annoying me because I hate losing. But it's a better distraction that tapping the table and waiting for the installation to occur. It's been 10 minutes and I'm 25% done ... phew.

Oh my goodness !!
I've been tinkering with Ark Linux for about one half hour and cannot believe my eyes. This is simply fantastic. The only thoughts running through my head at this moment are
(1) Tell everyone about Ark Linux.
(2) How is OpenOffice 1.0.1 going to run once it is downloaded from the dockyard repository? I hope it looks as good as the rest of the layout in which case there is a real winner here.
If you haven't tried this distribution then do not wait any longer. Download it tonight - now - stop reading and get it so that you can see what I mean. Words do not do it justice.

Images have been uploaded to the gallery (http://www.tuxreports.com/gallery.html). Make sure you look at the OpenOffice.org screenshot because it shows the power of TT Fonts.

Have they got the dual boot problem licked yet?
They are still working on the partitioning issue .. this alpha is definitely only for people who want to stick with Linux as the only OS on a hard drive ...
;) Hence why I ocassionly use it.
0.0... I have no idea whats up with that... I'm Ammiel from #arklinux, btw, maybe I'll register :)
Hey Ammiel,
Good to see you again. The Word Censors part of this forum was replacing some of your text.

Well, I registered... pretty strict censors :P... dockyard turns out to not work with my hardware (not entirely true... but I get kmserver errors :\)...but I was probably warned... I'm currently on Slackware, about Ark, updating is easy with Synaptic, install was very simple, and repartitioning is something I go through once a week at least :D, very good distro for those who don't necessarily want to deal with the command line, not to say the command line isn't in tact, just Ark Linux is well put together.
Is it possible to install into a spare partition and not mess with my other linux partitions? And can I have it boot from a floppy and leave my exisiting grub alone?
