I'm not much of a Windows user. In fact, if it wasn't for powerpoint then Windows would not be in my OS vocabulary.

Today, a student was going to show me some of his graphics work. I needed to run down to the office and pick up the attendance folder -- so I foolishly left him with the machine. When I returned there were popup ads everywhere.

Upon my return home, the popup ads were driving me crazy. Over and over and over again. The task manager showed 34 processes running. One of them was running to allow the popups. I finally shut off all processes that were not Common Startup and this stopped the popups.

First, what gives a webmaster even the THOUGHT that loading something onto a machine is ethical? Because they can do it? Because they generated a bunch of ad revenue until I figured out how to get it stopped? Gesh. How many people live with this?

Yikes. Get off Windows !

Yes

Yes
>>How many people live with this?<<

The vast majority of websurfers.

>>Yikes. Get off Windows !<<

I don't think it's a windows specific problem, it's just that many browsers (other than IE) now provide pop up blocking.

I've been using adsubtract in windoze for several years, & it always amazes me when I have to turn it off & I see all these pop ups.

For someone with limited bandwidth, those popups are a real time waster.

The worst part was that I was not surfing the web while I was using the machine at home. I was building a powerpoint. But because I was hooked up to the internet then the popup ads were being loaded - over and over and over and over and over and over again. Argh.

Oh well. Problem solved by using my Linux box :)

if it's a windows box, ad-aware and spybot - search and destroy, are your friends. They help with getting rid of any spy / ad ware that is on your box.
