I noticed that the names for my workspaces were not being saved after leaving a session. This wasn't noticed because I usually don't leave a session - for weeks at a time.
Anywho, this behavior of not saving wasn't acceptable so I started to look around. Birdie's Red Hat Linux 9 gnome session didn't save these names either (this is the box with Ximian desktop 2). EMH was too busy on her SuSE box for me to check. The Mandrake Linux 9.1 is off right now so I'll check it later.
I uninstalled gnome-panel and then reinstalled it. The gnome-session files were also uninstalled and reinstalled. This didn't help. Finally, all the packages on the system were upgraded and now the panel names are saved. With this method, I have no idea which file was causing the problem but that problem is solved.
Actually, there was a point where the gnome-panel was no longer showing. I launched a terminal (right click on main desktop => New Terminal) and typed gnome-panel. This brought the panel back but with horrible fonts. Plus, there is now a session error when a gnome session is started. A google search only showed people with this same problem installing gnome-control-center but that didn't help this box. :x
