View Full Version : cant figure out how to install the 2d CD?,
ok,i finally got redhat linux 7.0 1st CD to GUI, since i only installed KDE this time,
but now cant figure out how to install the 2d CD?,
File in CD 2 says
Mount/mnt/cdrom
See under ROOT-mnt/
Problem is so many items are opened in menu, I don’t know where to start to install CD 2?
I have a couple of questions for you.
Is there a reason you are trying Red Hat Linux 7.0 and not 9?
Have you tried 9?
I ask this because the KDE version you are using with this redhat version is older. Many of the nicer features are in KDE 3.0 and above.
Is the 7.0 version a boxed set, downloaded, from a company that just sells the CD?
Finally, what type of hardware do you have? I'm surprised that the cdrom was not automounted.
These questions might help all of us help you better.
In the meantime, here is a link to the Red Hat Linux 7.0 Manual (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7-Manual/getting-started-guide/).
Realize then that spelling and capitalization are important in Linux. For example, ROOT and root are not the same. Mount and mount are also not the same. Spacing is also important. So, watch spaces too.
So, to mount a CD-drive in a terminal shell would be:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom[Enter]
But only use that if the drive was not automatically mounted.
If you are trying to install more software then I might suggest you first install apt-rpm for Red Hat.
Hope this helps.
Oh, forgot to say -- welcome to GNU/Linux!
If Red Hat 7.0 is your first attempt at installation then don't forget to take a look at the newer release, as well as distributions like JAMD 0.0.6. You'll be blown away by JAMD.
Also, if you can, download and burn Knoppix (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7-Manual/getting-started-guide/). You can boot off this CD distribution without installing it to your hard drive. It has the latest versions of software so that you can compare what is on Red Hat Linux 7.0 and newer releases.
Good luck.
where is link for JAMD?
As for Knoppix,I have unable to FTP & download it ,despite trying many times using CUTE Ftp.
I have used an old 233mz,PC with 8gig drive to experiment with linux
I have searched web,it seems this would be good
Red Hat Linux 9 For Dummies, has 2 bonus CD-ROMs with a Publisher’s Edition of Red Hat Linux 9
The main website is here (http://www.boycottmicrosoft.net/jamd/)
Hope this helps.
:D

Red Hat Linux 9 itself doesn't, however.
What are your system's specs?

I would probally would just get redhat 9 dude, it's a whole lot better than 7, beleive me :)
But the second disk can either be extra packages that you can go into the RPM directory and install them like that, or it's just a source cd..just so the distro will comply with the GNU license.

You can try debian, I had it running on a 500 mhz k6 with 128 mb of ram, ran very well and the package system is great. I found a bootible cd of woody on their website, with that cd I was able to install everything from the Net. Only like 150 mb download iirc.
Hope this helps.
