Nautilus does not have a split pane view like Konqueror, Midnight Commander, or other file managers. However, it is possible to drag and drop from the View pane to the tabbed Tree pane or from tabbed Tree pane to within tabbed Tree pane.

Go to preferences, change default zoom level to 75% (to shrink the icons) click on show only folders so that it is now unchecked (this will allow you to see the files in the tree tab). Then click on the tab for Preview and disable many of them (to speed things up a bit). Close the File Management Preferences. Press F9 to have side panel. Now pull down the combo box and choose Tree. Tabbed Tree View now available.

I also tend to change the icon captions so that permissions is shown. You can choose up to three pieces of additional information when you zoom in (ctrl ++) the icon.

Please Note: You cannot drag from the tree pane to the view pane.

LPH,

Thanks for the information.

Sadly this is not a suitable workaround for my file management tasks.

I frequently have to compare files and their attributes from multiple directories, and it is a huge peeve of mine to have multiple windows to alt-tab between.

Even on Windows  I absolutly need a split view file manager (My favorite on that other OS is PowerDesk - http://www.v-com.com/product/pd_ind.html)

Oh well..I guess I still need to rely on the Gentoo file manager ( http://www.obsession.se/gentoo/ ). It's light and gets the job done, but darn..everyone needs a few sweets now and then.

Yes, gentoo is very fast indeed. This is the file on my Mandrake Linux 9.1 machine that I loaded with gurpmi.

Now, Nautilus has an advantage of mounting smb and nfs shares. I don't have enough experience with gentoo to know if this is possible. Guess it's time to read the documents :D

Ahh..I don't know if gentoo supports smb or nfs, but I suspect it doesn't.

I wouldn't need it anyways, since I use autofs for such things. By doing that, the shares are availble to me from both GUI and CLI.
