I saw this announcement on DistroWatch and decided to take a look at their website, www.tal.org. Many people are excited about Gentoo and the use of portage. It just seemed too slow with my hardware to compile and compile. The end results didn't "seem" to be any faster. However, not being one to just sit idle -- TA Linux iso is on the way to my local hard drive.

I hate waiting for downloads

So how did it go? Also, what are your impressions of Lorma Linux, which you also planned to insall, if I remember correctly. Can we look forward to more writing?

Lorma Linux
I'm using Lorma Linux on two machines but had to remove it from my main machine at work. Unfortunately, XP Pro had to be installed in order for my students to complete their PowerPoint Presentations. The school requires MS PowerPoint proficiency as part of the graduation requirement. I'll put Linux back on after the finals are over.

I've taken a few notes. My favorite part is starting a session with root. It really caught me off guard when it just started up in default and an xterm. It was great !

Some of the students had trouble with it. They couldn't seem to get the hang of simple things - like - where is the browser?

However, there were some students who saw the opening GDM (I believe) screenshot and then decided that was the machine that they wanted to work on ..

However, I can't say it enough times. MDK is still the one box the kids have managed to keep alive. All of the others get destroyed one way or another.

TA Linux
The small iso was burned on a CD and I started to lurk about on it. However, the going is a bit rough on it. I think the developers are on the right track and it's going to be a nice distro for some people who enjoy the challenges of Linux.

More writing
Absolutely. The response to the XD2 publication was really good. It is funny how some people posted on other sites that I've never used Linux. I guess they should come over to see my apartment :D

But - yeah - writing is a real bumber. Even if things are never published it is a good exercise to keep my mind active.

I still have many many distributions that I've played with but not written about -- so this month is going to be RPM based distros. Then I'll do debian based. Then source based. Then CD based. Then .. well... who knows. Maybe I'll continue to write but not publish :D

The girls seemed rather interested in the response to the XD2. Bird wants to rip Spark's head off over at gnomedesktop. Hopefully the guy will not come within her reach. That guy said some pretty mean things on OSNews and then denied them on his own site. I'm sure he is just backed into a corner and didn't realize that he was being rude. Honestly, some people just don't know when they are being rude. Maybe I'll cut him a break and leave it alone - maybe not

On a tangent: Did you see that Eugenia stated she was up to 11 machines? Phew.

I'm jealous and want more machines ! OK. Everyone. Listen up and please send me all your new hardware. You can keep the older. slower stuff. :D

Personal Note
Bird and EMH get here tonight and they might look over several articles. I usually abandon the yucky ones after writing them out - but instead I'll see about shoveling some of them out for others to rip apart.

Don't be jealous.

More machines means more headaches.

If you ask, the jealousness is probably in the reverse direction.

BTW LPH, what grade/age kids do you teach?

high school biology ;)

Machines == headaches ?

In that case, I'll gladly accept as many headaches as anyone wants to provide me.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I can tell you that I have exactly one machine for play/work (unless I count the old 200MHz laptop lying under the table).

LPH,

Are you looking for the machines for your own use, or is it for a school project?
I have a source that will donate slightly dated machines to schools and non-profits. (I couldn't convince him to donate to the NinerFan Institute of Advanced Study :) )

Also, you said you didn't want junky stuff, and it had to work..I have some pentium class machines that do indeed work. I was using them for LTSP clients. If they aren't too junky for you, they are all yours.

Jim,

If I'm reading your response, there are actually two offers here.

First Offer
I'd personally love more machines so that I can test more distributions. They don't need to be too wild either. So, if you have some, then yeah I'd love them.

Second Offer
My classroom would be better served if there were more machines.

In terms of your source -- my students need computers. As many as possible. There are only 5 in the classroom and yet I have 44 students (last summer of 54 were enrolled).

How many could your source donate?

The principal would surely write a letter so that your source could write it off something on their taxes.

OK. Please contact me so that we can make arrangements (lph@tuxreports.com).

Any other offers?
I need tables and chairs too. Anyone else have desks/chairs for my students? :D
