The results weren't pretty. It was just a mini review of the Wal-Mart $300 Lindows machines.

To quote from the article (sorry, CR requires money to view most reports online):

"We weren't impressed. The computer we tested was OK for web browsing, e-mail, and letter writing, but not much more. And anyone who equates "low-priced" with "basic and easy to use" will be frustrated. Instead, we recomend that you spend another $200 or so for a low priced Windows computer, like the ones we covered last month."

Their biggest complaint seems to be:

"At first glance the Lindows desktop may seem familiar. But the Lindows directory and file naming conventions are very different. In addition, the computer didn't detect or install a memory card reader plugged into the USB port. Attaching a scanner, digital camera, or PDA will be difficult or impossible. "

They also mention:
"Our computer crashed several times during tests, and it's built in help system didn't help much."

While I appreciate Consumer's Report's as the least biased source of information about products I have found, I frequently find fault with their conclusions.

While I am not a Lindows fan, their comment could well apply to *any* Linux distro.Just because it's *different* than windows doesn't make it *bad*. I think they should have investigated the subject more thoroughly.

Does anyone else think a letter writting campaign is in order?
