Tux Reports suggests that you begin by downloading several different types of distributions (RPM based, Debian based, Slackware based and Source Based) as well as Live CDs (Knoppix and SuSE). This will help you get a feel for the different types of distributions and the power behind them.

DistroWatch (http://www.distrowatch.com) is an excellent source for new releases. Links are provided to mirror sites for downloading.
