I've installed Suse 8.1 over FTP. It worked fine (for a while). When I try to install new packages through YasT he ask me for the CD1 disk (displaying the ftp-adress which I have used to install!).

Could it be that the used ftp adress is down, so that I can't upgrade/install packages anymore? The strange thing is when I ping to the IP adress I receive no errors.

I must say I'vent tried another mirror for the moment, so the possibility that the original used mirror adress is out of the air, is real (but i find it still strange because the ftp adress is still reachable through SmartFTP f.e.). So the IP adress and the directory on this IP adress is working and has content!

BTW: the installation through FTP was a breeze. The only disadvantage of course is you don't have a CD set to fall back in case of problems and that all the (new) installs of programs has to go through FTP,...

Any sugeestions?

Tnx

This is 8.1 or 8.2? I did 8.2 the other day on one of these machines and installing new software definitely works by going back to the mirror of initial installation.

SaX2 icon didn't work for me though :?

Hardware is an i815 based system -- one of the most common pieces of hardware out there -- yet most distros have a terrible time with it.

I didn't try this ... but probably should have done it this way. Hind-sight. Download the files to a local fileserver with FTP capability and use this install SuSE. This eliminates the reliance on a mirror.

You should be able to add several mirrors to Yast. Readding a mirror sometimes helps to get it to work after the installation.
Some mirrors are somehow incomplete and they miss certain files. If you get an error that indicates this, you should switch to another mirror.
