An avalanche of data blocked access to the SCO Group's Web site for several hours Friday, said the company, which has come under fire from Linux fans for an ongoing lawsuit against IBM.

What do you think about this? Is this peaceful demonstration or something else?

It's probably someone's *idea* of a peaceful demonstration, but it's despicable, nonetheless.
Misuse of bandwidth can affect unintended victims, I wouldn't be surprised if other sites nearby also suffered problems during the attack. Also there were 100+ machines infected with a virus & taken over to perform the attack.
No matter the cause, perpetrators of DOS attacks should be dealt with harshly.

What would be a proper punishment to fit the crime? or is it criminal?
For example, someone posted "Die Die Die" in our message box. We also receive these types of emails plus we receive people tinkering with the servers. It's a pain in the rear. Is it criminal or simply children who don't understand death threats are not a joke? My mind wonders about the 20 year old female who left terrorist threat notes on the cruise. She, quite bluntly, was just stupid. How many of these dumb messages are from people without brains?
However, after thinking about it -- there is one part of my personality that some people didn't realize when they were attacking. When someone tells me that I can't, shouldn't or must not do something then I am more apt to do it.
You see, I was on the verge of deciding today whether to keep this site or change it. I was waiting for the girls to wake up so that we could talk about it. The 'Die Die Die' message in the shoutbox convinced me that this site must remain and in fact grow.
It obviously got under someone's skin. Why anyone would be afraid of this site is beyond me but clearly they are afraid of me. There was never an agenda before, except to keep discussions civil. Now, more than ever, I'm sitting here thinking of all the things that can be helpful to new Linux users. To heck with the children who destroy things. You've unleashed a sleeping giant. So, beware dear young wannabe hackers, you went too far.
I'll keep things balanced but I will not keep silent about teenagers who are disrespectful, incapable of civility, and ruin the possibilities of Linux.
Long live civility. Long live respect. Long live Tux.

I can't for the life of me figure out why our youth in this country take freedom, independence, strength, etc. But the majority are just blind sheep following the left wing midia.
They are always saying how linux is running hard and not catching up to windoze, and such.
I got my winindependence some 6 months back and I fell my freedom every minute in front of my PC. My system runs stronger with less resouces. These social misfits that right things like Die Die in the shout box are a product of a socity that allows people to be unrespectfull at every turn, all in the name of freedom and rights.
What about our rights, I think we have a right to live in peace.
What every you do don't close this sight because of them. Please!
You folks have been a big help to me. Some day maybe I can help others in turn.

I'm pretty sure that there are already penalties on the books for cyber attacks, so yes, our government considers it a crime...problem is enforcement is tough.
I certainly enjoy this site & have gotten many useful tips both here & on articles you link to.
As far as the stupid posts in the "shouts" area, requireing registration to post would probably reduce that. My guess is that it is just too tempting to type something in, even if they don't have anything to say.
