Xandros picked up and installed my win modem on my laptop. When I set it to dial my ISP you can hear it dialing, and the ISP answering, but then it waits a minute, and gives me an error message that the connection failed. The log mentions that the failure had to do with PAP (password authentication protocol). But the password I have given it is correct.
If I go to a "console", and type a command which I found in some documentation ("ppp?") and ahve since forgotten tne final letter of, I get a message that says that the remote computer is required to identify itself, but my computer could find no "secret (password)" by which it could identify itself.
Help! Any ideas?

This is ringing some bells, but I can't recall any details right now.

You should also post this over at : http://forums.xandros.com/

I'll see what I can find...

You might try these links:

http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html

http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO/pap.html

As well as changing to CHAP instead of PAP and see if this works for you.

Let us know.

Xandros picked up and installed my win modem on my laptop.

Forgot:

Since you cannot connect, you probably didn't apply all of the Xandros Network patches for winmodems. Since you posted here then I assume you have some way of getting to the Internet. Download the patches and install them on your laptop and see what happens. In particular, pppd may need to be updated. But that is a shot in the dark.

Sorry to post so many times in a row ... I'm avoiding studying for a test I am to take in a few hours :)

I found this post that might be of interest:

Hi All

For anyone reading this hoping to find how to get a Lucent Winmodem working

I did it

I found I needed to load the following modules in sequence:

lt_modem
lt_serial
slhc
ppp_generic
ppp_async
