View Full Version : Redhat 9.0 install failed
Burned first CD in which md5sum agree. Install starts off the CD. Asks to hit enter or choose text mode. I hit enter. Ask for language, keyboard, and then method of install. CDROM comes back with an error to put in CDROM.
ctrl-alt-function key (don't remember which) comes up with error message that bread failed and something about a segmentation fault. I've looked all over internet but can't find out what is wrong.
This system has had dozens of different linux systems on it. But I went ahead and tried install on three different machines. All fail.

You mentioned all the steps during the beginning of your installation, but what I would like to know is if it actually installs any packages from that first CD?
Does it go on for a bit, and then is it possible that it is looking for the next CD?
Or does it crap out at the very beginning of where it copies the files?
Finally, one last question. You said you tried it on three systems. Were all three systems of differing hardware, or are they all essentially the exact same machine.

Thank you for the reply.
The screen says to insert in the CDROM. The error mesesage is seen when I use the ctrl-alt-function key. No files are copied since redhat is asking for the cd to be put into the drive (which it is -- since I booted off it). Now I didn't try to insert in any of the other cds since that is too soon in the installation.
Three different machines and three types of hardware.
Also tried text mode "linux text" at the prompt and the same questions are asked.

Sorry, one more question.
You mentioned that the first CD's "md5sum agree".
Was that the md5sum of the downloaded iso file? Or is that Red Hat's built-in
"linux mediacheck" option?
If it was the former, you'll want to try the latter to make sure that the CD was actually burned correctly. If you run the "linux mediacheck" option at the installation prompt, and it fails, then that means something went wrong during the burning of the cdrom, so hopefully you still have the ISO file to burn it again.
