A little over three weeks ago I installed Mandrake 9.0 with Win4Lin on my main system. To be honest, I am quite pleased with the results.

A friend wanting to experiment with Linux has ordered Mandrake 9.1 and plans to burn me a copy. I am wondering if the 9.1 install disks provide a safe upgrade path from my 9.0 installation. I realize I would still have to obtain/patch the kernel for using Win4Lin, but is the basic upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1 a pretty foolproof operation?

Is this how Mandrake users keep their systems up-to-date? Or do they simply make copies of their /home and /etc directories, wipe the filesystem clean, and install from scratch?

Just curious about my upgrade path for the future!

Install from scratch and save yourself a lot of aggravation. The upgrade option in the install program rarely works well for Mandrake or any other linux distro. Also, win4lin currently has Md 9.1 kernels available so that should be no problem. Just reinstall win4lin on Md 9.1.

If you need help with Mandrake, there is a really great community website you might want to check out:

Thanks for your input regarding Mandrake upgrades. Sounds as if upgrades in the Linux world aren't much different from the Windoze world, it might work, but then again, it might not.

I think that unless there is a compelling reason to upgrade, I'll just stay with what I have. It is working so well that I really hate to mess with a good thing.
