Is MPlayer set up to see DVD movies? I know the distribution of this ability is unlawful in some countries HOWEVER a friend brought over a PC to tinker with for a short while. It had Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and loaded with software. Movie Playing software was available and it played several encyrpted DVDs. So why is the distribution fine under MS Windows and not Linux?

Encyrpted DVD playback is a "grey area", so to speak. Some distros distribute decss packages (or the Mplayer equivilent), some do not. I'm not sure about Lycoris' Mplayer package yet.

Probably because MS keeps the source closed.

It's NOT illegal to PLAY the movie, only to reverse engineer/circumvent the copy protection.

An open source player probably would give folks everything they need to make illegal copies. Plus, one would probably have to have broken the law just to write the player software in the first place.
