Has anyone had any experiance with cell phone modems and linux?

I find even MS windoz people know very little in the arena.

I bought a Samsung Phone and data port cable, I have been using it with windoz 98se with get diffaculty. It often gives me the great and infamous blue screen of death. Even sprint has no idea what the issue is.

But the other day I just happen to leave the usb data cable plugged in when I rebootted into linux after being online with 98se. To my supprize Mandrake 8.1 harddrake picked up the samsung and called it a modem, asking if I wanted to configure it.

Now it shows up in the list of hardware listed as a modem, But dosen't fuction. I was wondering if the were any how-tos on this item. If where can I find them.

My big question is what port is a usb? In the internet wiz they ask where your modem is, you have choices from ttys0 to 8, and dev/modem.

Try discovering the USB device that has been created for your modem (eg. /dev/ttyUSB0) and then symlinking it to /dev/modem where kppp can find it.
