I have given Xandros another try, since I learned it was a debian based distro. Also I put it on another box. I'll have to say my frist impressions were in error, because I didn't understand it as debian I was thinking in terms of a newbie

I am very pleased with the installation this time and was using it for a couple of weeks with great success. But I was installing a program in the GUI the other day. And it ask if I wanted to do a build database fuction in relation to the program I was installing, the default was "no" but I said "yes", Then it proceeded to run for over an hour. Since it was late and I had to go, tommorrow not being able to return, I began tring to cancel the job.

I was unable to kill the process from within Xandros update, So the next step I went to Launch shutdown. The PC shutdown with no misshaps.

Now enters my problem! When I try and run Xandros update it says unable to load the list of software installable/installed, The is a fuction that says rebuild list, That also comes up with errors.

Now my question. Two parts, 1- is there a way to restore this program, 2- or is there another program I can use to install software with in the GUI.

Right now I'm researching how to install from the command line. I suppose I sould learn that at any rate. Maybe something good can come of my mishap if it makes me move out of my comfort zone and learn more

Hmmm...

Does aptget -f install (as root) rebuild the package lists?

As I've said I have only been using Linux for a short while, most the time running apps in the GUI.

this aptget -f command would be used in conjuction with the name of the app, Right? WHat is the systems name for Xandros Update?

That's one thing I dislike about Xnadros, they have made a real friendly GUI but they have taken liberitys with some of the program names in the GUI menu.

Oh, sorry.

Run a Command Prompt / Konsole and type:

su [enter]
[your root password] [enter]
apt-get -f install [enter]

This should rebuild the package lists for Xandros Update (Xandros uses apt-get as a backend for its Update utility, I think).

I don't actually have Xandros, but that would be the first thing I'd try.

Thanks Robbie N your advice on apt-get worked great. To the letter. I've got my Xandros back to runing in good health. I really apperciate your help.

If you were to get a debian distro, what debian would you use?

This experiance with Xandros has sold me on debian virs rpm distros. But i think Xandros is probably not the best one.

I settled on Libranet 2.7 for my personal machine. In fact, Libranet 2.8 is going through beta testing right now. So, look for it in the next month - you know the saying - it will be released when it is ready.

Check out the Libranet website, http://www.libranet.com , their forums, and even the great mailing list.

LPH is right, you'll probably like Libranet. It's more like a Red Hat (read: 'normal') Linux distro than Xandros is.

Hmmmm, I *thought* the command was apt-get update to rebuild the update database ?? Just looking for more info...

What does "Bad Penguin Language" mean?

For the record, Xandros Update, & Xandros Networks ARE just GUI front-ends for apt-get. They all use the same update file & package list as well, so if you change your sources in one, they are changed in them all.

muskrat: You could *probably* have accomplished the same thing by going to edit> update package list in XN... but it seems that sometimes the command line produces better results.

Search me... I'm a Lycoris user with precious little Debian experience...

What does "Bad Penguin Language" mean?

I think our Sophisticated Anti-swear Word Scanner ("SAWS" - LOL) has been at work ;-)

apt-get update retreives a new list of packages and it reindexes the local package database afterwards.

You can also run apt-get check and see if there is a problem. If necessary then run dpkg --configure -a (which is what I just had to do this AM for LindowsOS) which then requested apt-get update to be run.

The filter on the site replaced word(s) the author wrote with Bad Penguin Language. It keeps my daughters happy

This is muskrat, I just didn't log in and I got to go.

As for the Gui have a fuction to update the date base your right but that wouldn't fuction, apt-get did. it also ask for me to run dpkg which I did.

All in all it couldn't get fixed with the frontend access but the command line did it all before I finished my frist cup of coffee.

Please accept our apologies for the defacing of your post. The script isn't perfect, and we will continue to work on improving it.

When doing a total reload of the Xandros Desktop, you can maintain the
/root and /home directories. Follow the steps below:

1. Insert the Xandros Desktop 1.0 Installation Disc
2. Re/start your system
3. Click Next
4. Select "I accept this agreement"
5. Click Next
6. Select "Custom install"
7. Click Next
8. Select your software selection
9. Click Next
10. Select "Manage disks and partitions (recommended for experts
only)
11. Click Next
12. Select the Xandros Desktop partition
13. Click Assign
The Assign Mount Point window appears.
14. Select "Rename "root" and "home" folders to "root_old" and
"home_old" and remove all other data
15. Click OK
16. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the install

After successful re-install, you can restore the needed directories
(i.e. documents, e-mails...) from the /home_old directory.

This will allow you to start from scratch but preserve personal info, etc.

I don't know what tripped the script to deface my post, but it had to be bad spelling or grammer. I was in a run that day and didn't even log in so I can remember what I wrote.
