View Full Version : Red Hat Linux 8.0.92 (Phoebe)
It dawned on me that since I'm playing with this new release there should be a place to discuss it. Therefore, please use this thread to discuss the beta 1, code named Phoebe.
(1) A link to the release notes:
ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/redhat/linux/beta/phoebe/en/os/i386/RELEASE-NOTES
(2) Remember to use something like ProZilla to download the iso images. Accodring to the documents, the installation requires multiple CDs.
(3) HTree is enabled by default.
(4) Screenshots may now be taken within the install ation routine. They'll be placed in the /root/anaconda-screenshots/ directory.
I have about 17 screenshots saved and will upload them after the install is done.
I noticed that the install recognized the previous install of red hat and asked what it should do. I have a screenshot of it.
Looks pretty standard so far - with the exception of the new id of previous install.
Looks like we have Garrett LeSage to thank for the wonderful images in the install. Thank you !
The cute little chick screenshot failed. The install routine came up with an error message. The snow picture is fine.
I'm using my celeron 500 MHz piece of poop machine for testing this install.
MB = Gigabyte GA-6WFZ7 revision 2.0
RAM = 256 MB
HD = WD400 (IDE) set as master on primary channel
This is an i810 chipset system, built on-board video, sound and eth0. I blew out the sound by accident. The lamp next to it fell on top of the board while trying to find a way to hook up two wires to shut off the MB. Cause kinda of a spark. Sort of one. Due to the light bulb going out it's hard to know. Anyway, the board seems fine except the lack of sound.
So far, I'm 1/2 through the install. Beautiful pictures. Default Desktop Install is 1619 MB.
Not bad.
Someone on PCLinuxOnline asked if GNOME 2.2 was included with Phoebe.
According to this page [ http://developer.gnome.org/dotplan/schedule/ ] release 2.2 is January 29, 2003.
Update:
Man ! I misread that message completely. They are asking if this version of GNOME included with Phoebe will support the extra keys on an internet keyboards ...
Gesh.
Well, I have a Logitech keyboard hooked up to the test machine. It has three extra keys. I'll have to check it out.
kdelibs 3.1 just flashed by my eyes during the install. Also saw kdegames 3.1. Looks like XFree 4.2.99. Nautilus 2.1.5
Should mention:
OOo version 1.0.1-8
Mozilla 1.2.1-3
Evolution 1.2
The installation for the choice desktop is asking for the third CD. I have to get birdie to the doctor's appt. I should be back after 2 PM and can then finish things.
Wish Birdie luck !
OK.
We are back. The third CD is being burned as I type this message.
Birdie wants everyone to know that she was very brave. They stuck a scope down her throat to check the vocal cords. She has nodules. So, she has special intructions not to scream. I guess that means she has to be careful on what new distributions we give her to install :-)
Back to Phoebe.
Forgot to mention glibc 2.3.1
We are uploading the first 26 images. :)
After the third CD, the system rebooted and went through the typical Red Hat Linux 8.0 Post installation questions:

We are now reinstalling so we can put KDE onto the sytem. Our first install was just default. Red Hat doesn't offer KDE unless you choose the option. BTW: why don't they enable the scroll for the mouse by default?
PS. ACPI was enabled by default. Cool. However, this might cause problems for some hardware.

Create A User
That's new. User accounts used to be a standard installation screen, rather than a firstboot one.
That's odd...the default icons are different.
We've reinstalled Red Hat Linux 8.0.92 so that it includes KDE and many of the development files. Screenshots of the KDE desktop are now uploaded into the gallery.
has anyone gotten the nvidia drivers working with Phoebe(8.0.92) ?
At this point I am somewhat discouraged, I downloaded all 3 images, burned them and installed the system(3 times now). There are a lot of bugs- redhat-config-packages(a REAL BUMMER) bombs evertime I have tried to run it-and for the life of me I cannot get the nvidia drivers to work(1.0-4191 and 1.0-3223) I tried building source rpms, I tried the tar-ed source, everytime I ty to get X up and running with the nvidia drivers the screen flashes for a few, the nvidia logo appears, and then vanishes crashing with no errors reported except for a signal 11 exception.....
I tried recompiling the kernel(installtion kernel is compiled with 2.96.xx whereas X(4.2.99) is compiled with 3.2.1. I tried both the redhat-sources and with Con Kolivas 2.4.20 high performance kernel- the redhat source refuses to compile- I tried using the kernel config from /boot/config-kernel-2.4.20-2.2 and from /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs. No matter what I did the the build bombed after approx. 1 hour compilation time(recompiled 3 or 4 times).
With Con Koliva's kernel I could ompile correctly but then various parts of the system no longer worked correctly-not due to hardware drivers or such, but due to obscure things regarding the integration of the redhat kernel and operating system-I even tried the kernel config from the existing redhat source with Con Kolivas kernel, ie. make oldconfig-compiled fine, screwed up the system....and none of these things helped me to get the nvidia driver up and running- same signal 11 error over and over......
If someone finds a solution to this problem, I would ove to try redhat again
The new X looks better than anything I have seen before, and the fonts are incredible-I have never seen font smoothing so good, at least not without using propietary fonts-I am really impressed. I had read about the elimination of differences between gnome and kde in Redhat 8.0. but never having used it before, I was taken aback when I tried kde out-at first glance I could not tell that I was in kde-wierd-I normally use gentoo and I installed redhat-artwork on it and really liked it-but even though window-borders and widgets look much the same, one can still clearly see the differences between kde and gnome-redhat has obviated the distinction between gnome and kde-personally I like both-kde becuase of the wealth of apps and gnome becuase of the fine aesthetic and ui, -viva la difference!
redhat-config-packages(a REAL BUMMER) bombs evertime I have tried to run it-and for the life of me I cannot get the nvidia drivers to work(1.0-4191 and 1.0-3223) I tried building source rpms,
redhat-config-packages bombs under KDE on t he test system. I've seen it stated on the mailing list too.
Here is the error message:
(MainWindow.py:2679): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `glong' in cast to `GtkObject'
(MainWindow.py:2679): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: instance of invalid non-instantiatable type `guchar'
(MainWindow.py:2679): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: file gsignal.c: line 2056 (g_signal_handlers_destroy): assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed
Looks like it has been submitted a few times to bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=80283
Sorry, but I don't have a NVidia test board to try the drivers :-(

Thanks for the screenshots :) though it does not looks like drastic change from 8.0 to 8.0.92 other than a slightly updated system perhaps posting some impressions on the beta version or some of the features we may have overlooked
